Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics at the University at Buffalo is seeking a Japanese Language Lecturer for a 10-month (academic-year commitment) full-time, non-tenure track position with an initial two-year appointment with possible renewal, contingent on performance, department need, and availability of program funding.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities include teaching three Japanese language courses per semester, possibly at different levels, as well as providing assistance to the Director in the development of the Japanese Program such as training and supervising graduate and undergraduate student teaching assistants and other instructors, conducting placement tests, and (online) material development. The successful candidate must be able to regularly teach in-person classes on the University at Buffalo campus beginning fall 2021.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Japanese language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and Japanese linguistics
• Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English;
• Experience teaching Japanese language to English-speaking students at the university level
• Demonstrated teaching effectiveness.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of experience teaching Japanese at the university level is preferred. Also, preference will be given to candidates who have solid understanding of linguistic properties of Japanese and are familiar with contemporary second language teaching methodologies, instructional technologies and curriculum development.
