Position Summary

The Library Director is responsible for the efficient management and direction of the library, including operations, budget, supervision and direction of library staff, compliance with federal, state, and institutional requirements, and the effective coordination of services with the rest of the college community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operational Leadership

Supervises assigned area of responsibility and staff by recruiting and hiring, assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, resolving work problems, communicating job expectations, training employees, and developing professional growth opportunities. Coordinates activities and arranges for appropriate training and technical support.

Conducts annual employee evaluations, provides ongoing feedback and coaching, and effectively recommends pay increases, promotions and other personnel actions. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime as appropriate.

Administers disciplinary actions upon approval and in collaboration with Human Resources. Interprets, explains, carries out and enforces the College's policies. Conducts pre/post event meetings with staff and other assigned groups. Provides communication to staff regarding actions and decisions of board of trustees and administration.

Operations

Provides that instruction in information literacy is available to students, faculty, and staff in formats suitable to class, group, operational, or individual needs.

Ensures reference services are available and circulation activities and other library functions are effectively performed during the hours of library operation. Supervises the timely and accurate acquisition, processing, cataloguing and circulation of library resources. Ensures availability of e-resources and databases.

Ensures that multimedia support services and technology are available to students and faculty. Ensures adherence to applicable federal, state, and college laws, requirements, polices, and procedures within their area of authority. Ensures accessibility of college archives.

Business Process Management

Ensures the optimal functioning of the integrated automation system; ensures appropriate preservation of essential data and records. Advises college community of library resources and services available.
Works within the collection development guidelines approved by the academic deans. Plans and prepares for future growth and innovation.

Works with college staff to determine learning resource needs. Participates or makes assignment to appropriate college committees. Ensures that required reports for federal and state agencies and for internal needs are completed accurately and in a timely manner.

Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in library science, technology, and operations.

Requests appropriate personal professional development. Maintains communications and memberships as appropriate with professional associations.

Facilities and Fiscal Management

Prepares and recommends budget based on current needs and the requirements of effective operation. Ensures operations are conducted within budget parameters. Prepares and submits proposals for enhancement of services based on objective need analysis and use projections.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with diverse groups and communities. Partners strategically with Talent Acquisition to ensure the best Diversity, Equity & Inclusion practices are utilized in hiring that results in the hiring and retention of a diverse faculty and staff.

Helps to ensure the College meets its responsibilities in identifying problem areas and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination. Takes responsibility for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and productive work environment where employees feel valued and able to contribute to their full potential, regardless of their differences.

Assists with conducting workforce analytics to identify potential inhibitors of a workplace environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity and meets tight timelines and deadlines, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners.

Ensures College name and image is perceived positively by external as well as internal audience/stakeholders. Other duties as required. *Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for periods of time, stands, and walks.

Employee converses verbally or manually with others in person as well as by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions

Typical office and classroom environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices.

Skill, Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: library practices and procedures, including reference, instruction, collection, and access; Dewey Decimal System; online catalog and research databases; library systems and technology tools; familiarity with OhioLink or other library consortial environment. Knowledge of best practices in library instruction.

Skill in: verbal and written communications; maintaining good public relations; customer service; conflict resolution; general typing; application of job software programs; solving organizational problems; organization; leadership techniques.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS, MLIS) from and ALA certified program. Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in an academic library. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
