SEARCH FOR THE CHIEF OF POLICE

University of Maryland, Baltimore

THE SEARCH

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the state’s only public health, law, and human services university, seeks a Chief of Police to provide leadership, administrative direction, and strategic planning for the UMB Police Department (UMBPD). This is an important opportunity for an experienced professional to have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the Department, and the safety and well-being of the university community and its members.

Enrolling over 7,100 students in six nationally ranked professional schools— dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work, and an interdisciplinary Graduate School, UMB confers most of the professional practice doctoral degrees awarded in Maryland.  The University’s 71-acre educational, research, medical and technology complex resides in an urban setting in the City of Baltimore.  UMB boasts a leading academic health center that combines cutting-edge biomedical research and exceptional clinical care, and a 14-acre BioPark, Baltimore’s biggest biotechnology cluster, fueling the commercialization of new drugs, treatments, and medical devices.  The University’s students, faculty, and staff contribute two million hours of service annually, providing programming that improves Marylanders’ health and wellness, advances justice, promotes economic development, and strengthens families and communities.

Reporting directly to the Chief Business and Finance Officer and Vice President, this is a visible and vital opportunity for a skilled communicator and proven leader, well-versed in best policing practices and the needs of a large, complex urban educational institution. The University seeks candidates with outstanding leadership skills to join a cutting-edge community of professional faculty, staff, and students. The Chief of Police must be deeply committed to UMB’s public mission and its core values of accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, knowledge, and leadership. As a strategic thinker with a demonstrated collaborative, communicative style, the Chief of Police will develop a vision and lead the UMB Police Department and the University community in pursuing safety and security.

In pursuit of this, the Chief of Police will confront a set of opportunities and challenges that will impact the mission and operation of UMB.  These include providing exemplary public safety to all components of UMB’s diverse community; reviewing and assessing the Department’s operations, procedures, and practices to ensure efficiency and effectiveness; creating a culture of stability, respect and fairness with strengthening the sense of community and inclusion; supporting and developing a high caliber public safety team; and establishing connections and relationships with a range of external groups and police forces, including the Baltimore City Police Department.
