    Summary of Position

    The Academic Technologist/Instructional Designer reports to the Associate Director, LIT, supports faculty use of University-wide teaching and learning technology applications and is an integral member of the Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence (CTSE) team. In addition to partnering with instructors and educational developers to promote academic technologies that support equitable, student-centered, research-based instructional practices in a variety of learning environments, this position provides approved academic technology resources, digital documentation and workshops, responds to academic technology service tickets, and recommends innovative and emerging technologies designed to foster student learning related to the University’s strategic initiatives.

    Primary/Principal Responsibilities:
    • Instructional Design Support: Actively assist faculty, staff and student use of academic technologies such as the learning management system (currently Blackboard), video and voice tools, polling software, and remote and online learning tools. Develops and provides educational materials in a variety of platforms, facilitates workshops and collaborates with educational developers to support faculty use of academic tools for online, remote and hybrid courses
    • Academic Technology Support: Resolve ServiceNow Tickets During High Volume Times - Research, test and find solutions for issues, error messages and software bugs; track and resolve requests assigned to CTSE via ServiceNow.
    • Course, Organization, User Management and Instructional Documentation - Create, edit, add, enroll, & delete users, create, edit, and delete non-credit, sandbox, and template course shells, parent/child courses, and organizations. Create and maintain instructional materials, user documentation and instructional tutorials
    • One-on-One technological support: Meet with individual faculty clients one-on-one to diagnose technology concerns, provide resources, analyze technology use, and provide additional services as needed
    • Innovative and emerging technology support and collaboration : Support faculty with innovative and engaging social learning objects and tools. Stay up to date with emerging academic technologies. Support and assess pilots for emerging software and hardware technologies.
    • Contribution to the CTSE and the University: Collaborates with CTSE team members on new and revised processes and program; participates in CTSE team meetings and annual Symposium on Innovation in Teaching & Learning. Engages in University events and activities, as appropriate.
    • Professional Growth: Develops a plan for continual growth; takes advantage of appropriate local workshops, seminars and demonstrations; collaborates with colleagues at peer institutions; and subscribes to professional listservs and appropriate publications.

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • 3-5 years of experience working in higher education
    • Proficient with common academic technology tools (Blackboard, Zoom, video software, polling software, etc.)
    • Experience managing projects and developing a process for integrating academic technologies into the curriculum
    • Experience working with instructors to identify teaching and learning goals and provide relevant solutions for using available technologies
    • Experience administering Learning Management Systems and using office productivity software (MS Office365, Camtasia, Qualtrics, Word Press, HTML)
    • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly and remain up to date on trends and emerging technologies
    • Demonstrated success in collaborative environments
    • Experience with researching, evaluating, installing and piloting software
    • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
    • Ability to work well independently, willingness to multitask and assist on a variety of academic technology issues, detail-oriented
    • Open-minded, curious and enthusiastic about learning technologies.
    • Enthusiasm and empathy for those who struggle to learn technological skills
    • Solid written, verbal, and communication skills

    Skills Desired
    • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a similar field
    • Experience working closely with or on a help desk
    • Experience with third-party publisher LMS plug ins, video and multimedia production platforms, student response systems (web-based), course capture systems, web conferencing software, simulation environments, adaptive learning environments, Adobe suite, and other academic software applications.
    • Experience with learning analytics that provide evidence for improved student learning
