DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Part-Time Lecturer Pool Position

POSITION AVAILABLE: One or more temporary, part-time lecturers for a pool from which instructors of American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish programs will be considered for appointments as they become available for Fall Semester 2021, and/or Spring Semester 2022.

THE DEPARTMENT: Modern Languages and Literatures Department offers coursework in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Coursework focuses on the teaching of languages, civilizations, cultures, translations, linguistics, and literatures. Coursework prepares students with the cultural competency and academic knowledge necessary for future pursuits in the teaching of foreign languages and literatures, translation and interpreting, and for obtaining the ability to work in a culturally diverse society. The department offers B.A. programs in Spanish and French and minors in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish Studies.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teaching language acquisitions that integrate all the linguistic skills with the understanding of the culture. Or, teaching general education courses with bilingual capacity, multicultural competency, and expertise in phonetics/linguistics, translation, computer assisted language learning experience, or expertise in teaching target language for business, health care, law enforcement, and social work professionals. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.

RANK AND SALARY: Lecturer. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Position appointment is subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester begins August 17, 2021 and Spring Semester begins January 21, 2022.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must expect to have an earned Ph.D., M.A., or equivalent degree in the target language, literature, or cultural study along with native or near native language proficiency in the target language; one or more years of college level teaching experience. A Ph.D./M.A. candidate along with native language proficiency and extensive college teaching experience could be an acceptable equivalent discipline to a doctoral/master’s degree in the target language. Preferred qualification: willing to adopt the MLL team teaching approach for the elementary and intermediate level language courses.
