Head, Department of Medical Education
The University of Illinois College of Medicine has launched an international search for the next Head of the Department of Medical Education (DME). The DME is the oldest continuously operating academic unit in the world dedicated to innovation and scholarship in health professions education. Founded by Dr. George Miller in 1959, the department has long been a leader in psychometric measurement of learner performance, educational outcomes, curriculum development, and health humanities. Its 11 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members, 10 staff members, and numerous faculty holding joint or adjunct appointments teach and conduct research in the context of an internationally recognized Master in Health Professions Education program, a Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership, and a PhD program in Curriculum Studies in Health Professions Education in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Education. Department faculty contribute to the College’s innovative MD curriculum, graduate medical education, and continuing professional development programs. The Department’s clinical performance center, one of the first in the nation, opened a new 28,000 SF Simulation and Integrative Learning facility in fall 2019, and is poised for expansion of the department’s intramural and extramural activities in performance-based teaching and assessment. The Department is home to the newly endowed Dr. Ilene B. Harris Professorship, and we anticipate the new Department Head will be named to this Chair subject to commensurate qualifications and Board of Trustees approval.
The department’s scholarly activity routinely generates more than 100 peer-reviewed publications annually, supported by grants and contracts from the Department of Veteran Affairs, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Association of American Medical Colleges, American Medical Association, among others. The medical education community in Chicago offers opportunities for collaboration with locally headquartered organizations including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and numerous other entities. Department faculty have also contributed to the development of over 35 medical schools (including establishment of new medical schools and conducting faculty development activities) through international consultation services.
The College seeks a recognized leader in health professions education. The candidate must possess a doctoral degree in an educationally related discipline and/or an MD or equivalent degree, with experience in designing innovative educational programs and partnerships and with the stature and communication skills necessary to represent the department and college within the university and the national and international educational research communities. Applicants should also have demonstrated excellence in teaching, a record of scholarship consistent with the Department’s mission, and be able to contribute to the Department’s multi- disciplinary scholarship. The department head reports to the executive dean of the College of Medicine.
