POSITION TITLE: Mental Health Counselor                               

REPORTS TO: Vice President for IR, Quality and Assessment

WORK SCHEDULE:   Hours Vary, mainly late afternoons, part-time, weekends, flexible schedule, exempt

CLOSING DATE:  Open until filled

Counselor Position Summary:

Respond to urgent and emergency situations with students and provide counseling and crisis intervention. Conduct clinical assessments, develop and implement appropriate responses and treatments, including immediate hospitalization and/or referrals as needed. Follow-up to monitor the progress of students’ treatment and recovery. Provide mental health-related training to faculty and administrators. Provide students with consultation and personal counseling in addition to developing programs, workshops, support groups, compilation of literature and resources, training and supervising student peer counselors, and other campus community outreach activities.

         Academic Difficulties

         Depression

         Anxiety

         Time Management

         Addiction Issues

         Family Expectations

         Relationship Issues

         Healthy Relationships

         Cultural Adjustment

         Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques

          De-stigmatizing Mental Health

        Cultivating Holistic Health and Wellness

    Qualifications:

Required Education:

  • Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work/Psychology and license (LCPC, LMFT, LMSW), PhD in Counseling Psychology, or licensed PsyD with appropriate expertise and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in relevant discipline, i.e., Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Counseling Psychology, is required. Must hold appropriate CA state licensure. Must hold appropriate malpractice insurance. Must demonstrate knowledge and skill in the areas of short-term counseling, crisis intervention, program development, alcohol and other drug prevention education and intervention, consultation and outreach. In addition, the Counselor must exhibit personal attributes that enable him/her to facilitate interpersonal relationships and communicate with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Preferred Education:

  • Advanced training/research in suicide prevention and sexual assault cases.

Required Experience:

  • Two years of clinical case management experience in a trauma setting, mobile crisis response unit (e.g., hospital emergency room, community mental health center, or similar community based organization), private practice, case management for the county, etc., addressing depression, suicidality, sexual assault cases, substance abuse and emotional and other psychological issues. Experience assessing students with suicidal ideation.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with diverse college population managing treatment.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with research on mental health needs of college students including suicide prevention.

Working Hours:

P/T position. Hours vary (mainly later afternoons), but some flexibility is required.  Position reports to the Vice President for IR, Quality & Assessment. Pay is dependent on experience and qualifications. ($35.00/hr +)
