The Director of Student Academic Success plans, oversees, organizes, and directs student services for the Office of Student Academic Success, and is responsible for establishing policies and procedures necessary to support students and staff. This position oversees and manages the pre-major academic advising team. The Director provides leadership and corollary support for first-year admissions, the internal application process, strategic coordinated care using our success management system. pre-major student retention, and other retention and success initiatives to ensure that these functions fulfill pre-major student needs, as well as the goals and objectives of the Office of Student Academic Success. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success and performs a variety of professional-level administration and programmatic functions, including developing strategic plans and overseeing their implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership of Pre-major Advising:
  • Provide leadership and direction for the advising of pre-major students and ensure the pre-major advisors have the support and supervision needed to be responsive to student needs.
  • In collaboration with the AVCSS, develop and administer the FYPP budget for student services and advising initiatives. Direct the forecast of additional funds needed for programming, materials, and other expenses. Monitor and approve expenditures; make mid-year corrections.
  • Train and mentor Office of Student Academic Success staff to develop their full potential and to enhance the continuity of competent and committed staff, including developing leadership capacities of staff to ensure they meet their professional goals.
  • Cultivate a diverse, cohesive, mutually accountable, and high-performing staff that can proactively anticipate and address organizational challenges. Includes general supervision, corrective action, resolution of personnel disputes and problems, assistance with promotion, and reclassification.
  • Provide support in handling complex student issues including oversight for petitions.
  • Implement relevant research-based practices and strategies to ensure pre-major students receive relevant, intentional, and identity-based advising.
  • Assess advising policies and practices; develop and implement practices that support increased advising capacity and quality for a diverse student body.
  • Serve as voice of authority the Office of Student Academic Success and University policies and procedures for pre-major academic and student services.
  • Develop long and short-term strategic goals, which are in alignment and support of the Office of Student Academic Success strategic direction and University of Washington Bothell Strategic Plan.
  • Plan, facilitate, and schedule staff meetings.

    Leadership of Student Academic Success Programs:
  • Under the general direction of the AVCSS, shape and inform the planning and implementation of strategic initiatives to improve programming and services to students. Keep AVCSS apprised of emerging or ongoing issues in areas of responsibility.
  • Act as liaison to campus and school-wide committees and task forces to support student success and academic advising
  • Collaborate with schools and other campus programs to ensure pre-major students have successful transitions into and through UW Bothell, into major that meet their desired career and post-graduation goals.
  • Collaborate across tri-campus to develop and implement programs that promote student success.
  • Participates in regional and national conversations in supporting student success in the ever-evolving higher education landscape.
  • Co-chair the Coordinated Care Leadership team that oversees the application administration of UWB’s student success management system and the corresponding strategic coordinated care network.
  • In collaboration with the AVCSS, identify systemic barriers in curricular and academic pathways and work with faculty and campus leaders to find equity based approaches to remove these barriers.
  • Keep AVCSS apprised of emerging or ongoing issues in areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare reports, proposals, and other documents that support the work of the department.
  • Use valid and reliable instruments that assess student success and the evaluation of programs and services. Disseminate information of assessment findings to campus and external constituencies. Facilitate the use of assessment findings for continuous improvement.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master’s Degree in education, counseling, student development, social services or similar area.
  • At least four years of academic advising experience in higher education or closely related student-facing or student services experience including at least two years of management and leadership experience in a higher education context, involving team supervision and/or development.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Demonstrated experience in managing strategic development and implementation of new initiatives. Ability to develop, implement, assess and refine initiatives in a deliberate, collaborative, timely, and effective manner, and to motivate others.
  • Demonstrated facility in working with and promoting the success of student populations strongly represented at UWB: first-generation, URM, immigrant, and international students.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for advising in or across multiple programs of study and in interdisciplinary fields.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with campus leadership and advocate for students’ success.
  • Demonstrated excitement to work in a diverse, dynamic, challenging environment and be invigorated by innovation.
  • A strong foundation in applying a social justice and equity theoretical framework to all aspects of program design, implementation, and evaluation.

    DESIRED:
  • Aptitude for learning and adapting new technologies pertinent to student enrollment and advising management (e.g., databases, client relation management systems, etc.
  • Facility with basic content management software and graphics for print and electronic mass communication.
  • Bilingual ability to speak and write fluently in a language other than English (Spanish, Chinese, Korean preferred).
  • Experience with using EAB Navigate or similar systems to generate reports for data informed decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain successful campus and community partnerships
  • Experience teaching or training college undergraduates.
  • Familiarity with national models or programs relating to student success in higher education

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Work is performed in an office setting during regular business hours.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
