Job Summary

The Fashion Merchandising and Design department at Johnson County Community College is accepting applications for an adjunct instructor in the Apparel Design and Technology program. We are seeking an instructor for the following classes:

FASH 255 – Apparel Specification Technology
Course Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to define the critical components of an apparel technical package and its importance in the product development process. Students will use industry product lifecycle management software to develop a detailed apparel technical package. The class will use lecture, demonstration and hands on experience. 3 hrs. lecture/wk

FASH 190 – Apparel Fit and Analysis
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to analyze and detect common fit problems in various types of garments and apply the knowledge of construction and pattern making to make changes and solve problems. The class will use a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands on experience to teach the skills necessary for pattern alteration to reach desired fit criteria.

FASH 150 - Textiles
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to differentiate fibers and fabrics according to their specific characteristics and to select fibers and fabrics for specific applications. In addition, the student should be able to identify properties and characteristics of natural and man-made fibers, the properties and characteristics of yarns, fabric construction methods including weaving and knitting and various finishing processes including printing and dyeing.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
At least two years of related industry experience
Advanced understanding of Technical Design and all components of apparel tech packages
Strong computer skills including Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. (portfolio/samples required)
Working knowledge of patternmaking, draping, garment construction, fitting and alterations for apparel. (portfolio/samples required)
Strong comprehension of textile properties/science and how they impact the product development and design process including dyeing and surface design
Written and oral communication skills
Organization and classroom management skills
Motivation to teach and mentor students at the college level and promote student success
Ability to facilitate a positive and engaging learning environment that fosters creative and critical thinking

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree
Post-secondary or college teaching experience
Teaching experience in Apparel Design
Knowledge of Gerber Yunique PLM or a comparable program
Community involvement in organizations tied to fashion
