Student Affairs Marketing and Communications Specialist

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Digital Marketing and Communications, with a dotted line to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the incumbent enriches students' lives by staying in touch with their needs, supporting their life goals and connecting them with SJSU student services. The incumbent serves as the lead marketing and communications officer for the Division of Student Affairs. The incumbent is responsible for providing strategic communications support to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs; raising the profile of the Division of Student Affairs; staying in touch with best practices for reaching students; creating strategies to attract prospective students and engaging with current students; supporting a unified approach to the campus's brand and identity guidelines within the division; providing consultation to departments and units on how best to market their programs and services to students; providing marketing communications resources and services; and managing communications vehicles that serve the entire division. The incumbent will be a key team member of any crisis communication planning or activations. This role serves as the key resource for sharing best practices in electronic communications as well as social media. The incumbent will be integrally involved with any crisis communication related to students and/or the division.



Key Responsibilities
  • Creates, implements and measures the success of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that will enhance the division’s image and position within Higher Education and the general public, and facilitate internal and external communications.
  • Manages the strategic and creative design of Student Affairs marketing and communications activities and materials.
  • Ensures articulation of the division’s desired image and position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout the institution, and assure communication of image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external. Uphold protocol to ensure a uniform “house style” (uniform fonts, logos, pictures).
  • Serve as a resource for editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all student affairs publications.
  • Develops technical assistance and resource materials to assist various departments in the marketing, communications and positioning of their activities.
  • Promotes Student Affairs programs and services by utilizing an array of multimedia marketing and communications tools including social media. Designs promotional materials such as flyers, slides for TV screens, videos, or event coverage.
  • Develops a variety of print and digital platforms that are used to develop and execute effective marketing campaigns.
  • Develops short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing and communications program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance.
  • Develops, implements and monitors systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the marketing and communications function.
  • Develops and coordinates means to seek regular input from the division’s key constituencies regarding the quality of programs and services and the institution’s relevance.
  • Serve as a key team member in regards to crisis communication.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience developing and implementing executive level and mission-critical communication strategies
  • Excellent oral, written and verbal communication skills to communicate with the university community and general public
  • Skilled in translating organizational priorities into structured, strategically aligned plans with objectives, strategies, tactics, timelines, resources, metrics, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated communications strategy and execution across channels including digital and print
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. Ability to write quickly and under time pressure constraints
  • Expert knowledge of grammar and style guides, and University Communications
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability and experience using InDesign, Photoshop, Drupal or equivalent web CMS
  • Demonstrated ability and experience using d-SLR camera is a plus
  • Knowledge of HTML and related website development technologies
  • Familiarity with basic SEO strategy and web accessibility principles
  • Ability to write and edit content for the web, with knowledge of best practices for content strategy and management
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices in crisis and emergency communications.
  • Ability to synthesize disparate inputs, ideas and suggestions and forge consensus
  • Experience collaborating with designers, web developers, photographers, multimedia specialists, content developers and social media communicators
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field
  • Five years of related professional or technical experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in a related field
  • Experience developing and managing budgets
  • Experience hiring, training, developing, supervising and appraising personnel
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success, preferably in higher education
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications, website management, and social media content creation and management
  • Experience demonstrating computer literacy in word processing, data base management and page layout including experience with Adobe Creative Suites and MS Office product and other general-purpose tools (Acrobat, FTP, multiple Internet browsers, etc.)
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsibly while managing numerous projects simultaneously
Compensation

Classification: Public Affairs/Communication Specialist III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,211/month - $6,200/month
Salary Range: $4,104/month - $7,425/month
