Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the University’s Executive Director for Equity and Compliance / Title IX Coordinator.
  • Investigates formal complaints and assists in resolving reports of alleged discrimination and sexual misconduct (including but not limited to harassment, abuse, bias, inequity, sexual violence, retaliation, and any other misconduct alleged to have been motivated by the affected party’s protected characteristics or identities) among faculty, staff, student, and other covered stakeholders within the University community.
  • Conducts prompt, thorough, impartial, reliable, and person-centered investigations into allegations contained within the aforementioned complaints.
  • Develops, communicates, and implements relevant procedural timeline and process expectations to all parties.
  • Interviews complainants, respondents, witnesses, and other individuals as relevant to the alleged misconduct.
  • Gathers, reviews, and impartially analyzes available data and evidence to determine or recommend findings of responsibility and/or propose appropriate resolutions/outcomes.
  • Identifies and applies University policies relevant to a complaint.
  • Drafts concise, professional written reports presenting steps taken in investigations, investigative findings, and relevant documentation/evidence for review by involved parties and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Collaborates with campus and community partners to make recommendations and implement reasonable supportive measures in the resolution of complaints.
  • Diligently updates and maintains case files and other records related to complaints.
  • Delivers presentations, training, and other educational programming to faculty, staff, & student populations.
  • Assists with data collection and preparation for reports, presentations, and other publications required by law (e.g. Clery Act, Illinois Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act) or as requested by Title IX Coordinator or other University senior leadership.
  • Maintains a high level of cultural competence, overall responsiveness, attention to detail, and the ability to exercise excellent and unbiased judgment and reasoning, free from any conflict of interest.
  • Continuously identifies and integrates best practices in Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, and other student- and employee-related regulatory investigation fields.
  • Possesses an ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality and remain impartial in complex and emotionally charged situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Juris Doctorate or Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration or related field; and at least two to three years of related investigatory experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state civil rights laws and regulations, and experience implementing related institutional policies and procedures.
  • Prior experience conducting Title IX, Title VI, and/or Title VII discrimination/equity/bias related investigations.
  • Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving, interviewing, and investigation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency and inclusive excellence, and the ability to effectively relate and communicate across difference.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and written & verbal communications skills, including teamwork and interpersonal communication.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills to facilitate resolution of challenging scenarios, including the ability to analyze sensitive, complex, and confidential topics.
  • Investigatory experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
