Position Summary

The Columbus State Upward Bound program serves 70 high school students from Columbus City Schools. Upward Bound works with first-generation and/or income-eligible high school students to help them graduate and develop skills necessary for college enrollment and completion. The Upward Bound Specialist will collaborate with colleagues to provide various opportunities for participants to build academic proficiency and social/cultural competency. The Specialist will assist in planning, organizing, and facilitating program activities and events, and with recruitment and retention of program participants.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PROGRAM SUPPORT

Provide mentoring and transitional support to recent high school graduates participating in the Upward Bound summer component. Assists with needs of the Upward Bound Summer Enrichment Institute for 9th-11th grade students.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Reports to site on time and prepared, as directed. Models’ professional behavior with participants, parents, and staff. Handles disruptive behavior with respect, following guidelines, processes and procedures, and reports any issues to the Upward Bound Program Manager, Advisor, and/or TRIO Director.

CLASSROOM & COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Monitor progress of each BRIDGE or CCP participant to ensure successful completion of their summer course. Facilitate supplemental instruction and academic advising to ensure BRIDGE or CCP participants follow and understand course curriculum/assignments.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Actively participates in staff development workshops which contribute to personal and professional growth. Attends all required department meetings and training. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office/academic environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices. Must travel to various Columbus State campuses and sites.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: English word usage, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation; computer software, programs and applications; child development; K-12 education systems.

Skill in: Excellent verbal and written communication; organization; customer service; conflict resolution; application of job software including word processing and spreadsheets; performing mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, decimals, percentages and fractions; planning and scheduling.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED with at least three (3) years progressively responsible experience in college readiness/access work. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
