Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the proper operations, maintenance and repair of the steam and hot water producing and distribution plant at NCCU. System operates 360 days a year, with 5 days set-aside for federal/state inspections and repair; the system encompasses all controls in building mechanical rooms that use steam and hot water; position ensures that systems are monitored and inspected constantly and equipment adjusted to avoid malfunctions, and ensures that the equipment is operating within set operation ranges; this work involves quality assurance, valve, pump and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, precision measuring, system controls, hydrostatic testing, trouble-shooting, and problem solving; position involves the operation of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment in order to fuse metal parts in situations where weld strength is a necessity, such as in the construction or repair of steam boilers and high pressure steam lines; remove defective high pressure steam piping, cuts and fits replacement pipe, tack welds into place, and make final weld.


Minimum Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of system encompasses all controls in building mechanical rooms that use steam and hot water; knowledge of quality assurance, valve, pump and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, precision, measuring, system controls, hydrostatic testing, trouble-shooting, and problem solving; knowledge of monitoring and inspecting constantly and equipment adjusted to avoid malfunctions, and ensures that the equipment is operating within set operation ranges; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills; a valid driver’s license is required.
