General summary/purpose:

The person in this role will oversee a team within Johns Hopkin University’s (JHU) Shared Services Center responsible the third-party payer contracts process across all nine schools. The Third Party Payer Supervisor is responsible for maintaining effective internal controls and creating a positive working environment that supports continuous improvement. This person will evaluate processes for efficiency and effectiveness on an on-going basis; directly supervise four staff, and report to the Assistant Director of Student Accounts. The Third Party Payer Supervisor will have oversight responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of student financial transactions as recorded in the Student Billing System. This person will provide superior customer service support via phone, mail, and email.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Supervise a Shared Services Center team responsible the third-party payer (TPP) contracts process.
  • Manage the group’s invoicing for qualified tuition and fees, maintain third party payer and related student account records, and manage all correspondence regarding these accounts.
  • Research account disputes and billing discrepancies
  • Respond to student inquiries regarding account status and resolve account discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of collection activity.
  • Organize and summarize TPP for reporting.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, training and development of permanent staff. Provide annual performance reviews for staff in accordance with JHU policies and procedures.
  • Develop work schedules, monitor attendance, and approve leave requests. Responsible for processing all ISR and payroll transactions for department.
  • Work closely with the University Director of Student Accounts to establish and maintain customer service standards and metrics within the Shared Services Center.
  • Research, resolve and respond to routine inquiries from internal and external sources regarding student accounts. Review accounting transactions to locate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Cultivate a collaborative work environment, promote staff development, and foster service excellence.
  • Provide data analysis and reporting to University Director of Student Accounts as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position offers the option to work remotely on occasion, but candidate must have the ability to participate in meetings, receive and make phone calls, conduct on campus workshops, provide in person and virtual support to the JHU student one-stop centers, and attend in person training and conferences as needed.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting, business management or related field required.

Minimum of 3 years progressively related experience required, including supervisory experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in student accounts or general accounting setting required. Prior work experience in an academic setting preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to handle confidential information; must be able to work well under deadlines and work independently to resolve problems in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in desktop computing using MS Office (Outlooks, Word, Excel) and web interfaces on a Windows platform.

Additional knowledge, skills & competencies

  • Prior experience with JHU’s Student Information System (SIS) would be beneficial but not required.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience using the University’s financial ERP (SAP).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural responsiveness, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including students, staff, and administrators.
  • Demonstrated technical skills utilizing a range of information databases.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze financial data and conduct research to resolve problems.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to prioritize, and work on multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, often with many interruptions.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, friendly, courteous, and collaborative.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
