Overview of position

The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) invites applications for its Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA). This position reports directly to the Dean, who has authority over all academic and administrative matters at TUJ. The ADAA serves on the Dean’s cabinet as a key part of TUJ’s leadership and functions as the chief academic officer with responsibility for all aspects of the academic program at TUJ. The key priorities of the ADAA are helping implement TUJ’s new strategic plan that focuses on providing an exceptional student experience, developing global-ready students, versatility, innovation, and collaboration. The priorities also involve enhancing the quality of education, increasing student success, and continuing to strengthen ties between TUJ and Temple’s Main Campus.

The Associate Dean closely collaborates with and advises the TUJ Dean on all academic matters and TUJ campus programs. The ADAA focuses on student engagement and retention. This position plays a leading role in the critical planning, decision-making and implementation process for new academic programs and the continuing review, oversight, and evaluation of existing programs. The ADAA manages the undergraduate program and related budgets while also overseeing campus and program accreditation activities. The ADAA will work closely on academic matters involving Showa Women’s University and other university partners.

The ADAA is also responsible for helping provide an exceptional student experience, developing methods to improve student retention, improve the quality of instruction, and manage the student evaluation process. The ADAA is also responsible for academic liaison with the University’s schools and colleges, as well as relevant departments in the Office of the Provost, to ensure program quality, as well as compliance with University policies and procedures. The ADAA oversees the work of search committees for academic appointments and where appropriate, sits as a member or as chair of such committees.

The Associate Dean’s portfolio may include the following: the undergraduate and graduate program directors, Bridge program, the Registrar, the Director of Research, the Director of the Institute for Contemporary Asian Studies, Director of the Academic Advising Center, and the DRS Coordinator among others.


Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Provide primary staff management and oversight responsibility (establishing goals, prioritizing projects, reviewing and evaluating results) for the following direct reports and functions:
    • Undergraduate program coordinators responsible for the TUJ majors; some or all of the graduate program directors (Law, EMBA, TESOL MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics); Bridge coordinator; faculty directors for assessment, curriculum, faculty development, first-year writing, and the TUJ Honors coordinator.
    • The Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs (undergraduate admissions, scholarships, and course scheduling functions); the TUJ Registrar’s Office (academic records, transcripts and degree certification, as well as student and course data generation); the Academic Advising Center (undergraduate student curricular advising, progress to degree, and transfer credit analysis); and the Disabilities Resources and Services function (academic accommodations, accessibility and universal design of learning).
    • The Institute for Contemporary Asian Studies and the Director of Research.
  • Monitor academic programs to assure that they meet or exceed the University’s standards for program quality, teaching excellence, student expectations and needs, core requirements, and accreditation standards.
  • Establish and implement TUJ standards for appointment of faculty and approve appointments consistent with those standards when necessary.
  • Work together with the Associate Dean of Library and Learning Innovation as well as the Teaching and Learning Center to create programs to assist, encourage, and coach faculty to improve their instructional activities.
  • Develop and oversee the evaluation of teaching, including student evaluations, peer evaluations, and other mechanisms of teaching evaluation in collaboration with the Dean.
  • Promote innovative, “state-of-the-art” teaching techniques, providing a venue for sharing pedagogical strategies across disciplines, introducing advances in teaching and curricular improvement, strengthening graduate students' teaching skills and enhancing and facilitating undergraduate and graduate student learning.
  • Advance practical application of technology improvements in both the classroom and on-line teaching environments.
  • Monitor accreditation preparedness and success of all academic programs as well as meeting with visiting accrediting and program review teams, as necessary, in concert with the Dean and appropriate university officials.
  • Review, evaluate and recommend action plans to address program shortcomings and identified opportunities.
  • Review proposals for new academic programs and policies and monitor reviews of existing programs for TUJ.
  • Work collaboratively with all directors and staff of TUJ’s functional and academic departments.
  • Serve as liaison between departments and college administrative offices.
  • Assist with student life issues, counseling and/or referring students as appropriate.
  • Assist with student recruitment and relationships with high schools and universities.
  • Work closely with standing committees deliberating on faculty and student awards and honors for academic achievement and excellence and, as necessary, on other committees related to academics, students, research, data or technology.
  • Advise the Dean regarding faculty issues including recruitment, appointments, promotion and tenure, contract renewal, study leaves, unpaid leaves of absence and interpretation of various faculty policies.
  • Investigate and make recommendations to the Dean on inquiries from the faculty regarding academic issues.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

    Qualifications & Experience

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited college or university in any recognized academic discipline required.
  • Proven record of scholarly excellence in his or her field of academic expertise.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fostering excellent teaching, strong research and creative endeavors.
  • Experience in academic administration preferred, including strategic planning, budgeting, personnel administration, or academic program development.
  • Excellent management, oral and written communication skills.
  • Organizational leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated strong problem solving, project management, organizational, analytical, and human relations skills required.
  • Ability to work with a diverse community in a professional, helpful, and respectful manner.
  • Although the ability to communicate in Japanese could be helpful, it is not required.
