Department Summary

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at CSUSB provides students and their families with information about financial aid resources and facilitates funding in an accurate and timely manner to assist students in pursuing their educational goals.


Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Student Services Professional IB provides professional student service assistance to students, parents and the general public regarding all federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs. The Financial Aid Technician is responsible for performing thorough reviews of verification documentation required for and all institutional policy and federal and state regulations. Assignments require the application of both subject matter knowledge and sound judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, guides and professional skills characteristic of a particular student service program or activity. This generally requires a detailed analysis of individual student needs using established guidelines, regulations, and precedents.

The Financial Aid Technician will assist in the development, maintenance and application of specific program area knowledge and expertise within one or more assigned program areas and be able to counsel students on University policy, when and where applicable. The Financial Aid Technician must exercise extreme discretion and adherence to regulations governing confidentiality and privacy of records (FERPA) is mandatory. They will provide a high level of sensitivity and a professional demeanor when counseling students who are of varied age groups, disabilities, diverse cultural and financial backgrounds often in highly stressful, emotionally charged situations.

The Financial Aid Technician will process a variety of reports to assist in the delivery of financial aid effectively and efficiently to students.

Employment Status: Full-time, probationary, "non-exempt" position (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.



Key Qualifications
  • Two years of progressively responsible professional financial aid experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations that govern the processing and awarding of financial aid.
  • General knowledge of individual and group counseling techniques.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to learn and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Preferred Qualifications (if desired)
    • Experience advising students; either in a group or individual setting.
    • Knowledge of: (CMS) PeopleSoft, NSLDS (National student loan data systems), COD (Common Origination and Disbursement. Systems), WebGrants, ELM (Electronic Loan Management), and Hyland OnBase Imaging System (Or comparable Image & workflow software).
    • Two or more years of experience working in a Financial Aid Office with direct experience performing verification and awarding student financial aid with specific Title IV programs, ie: Pell Grants, Federal Work Study, Direct Loans, or state aid such as Cal Grant.

    Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.)


  • Experience: Equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. (Equivalent amounts of graduate-level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.)

  • Salary:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,796.00 - $3,900.00 per month

    Classification Range: $3,796.00 - $5,369.00 per month
