Overview

Employment Status: Full-time, Probationary, Exempt position.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

  • Department SummaryThe Office of Strategic Communication (OSC) is responsible for leading and managing the university's marketing, public relations and media relations activities to advance the university's mission, core values, and strategic directions. The OSC is challenged to develop a top-flight external relations and internal communications program targeting the institution's diverse constituencies and to develop successful marketing and public relations efforts that enhance the image and visibility of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). By promoting the strengths and accomplishments of CSUSB to regional, national and international audiences the OSC plays a critical role in advancing the University and cementing CSUSB's reputation as a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California.

    Typical Activities

    Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President in the Office of Strategic Communication with clear responsiveness to the University President, the Advancement Writer will assist with the preparation of speeches, talking points, remarks, reports, presentations, statements, articles, daily correspondence and other written material on behalf of the President and other senior leadership in connection with speaking engagements or other activities. This process will include research, writing, editing, and consultation with a wide range of offices and individuals both inside and outside the University. In addition to the responsibilities above, the Advancement Writer will assist others in the Office of Strategic Communication and University Advancement with public relations activities designed to extend the impact of and knowledge about the University to an ever-increasing number stakeholder groups and target audiences, both on and off campus.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts and market research into clear, compelling language for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to conform writing style to executive leadership messaging.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as individuals.
  • Ability to multitask effectively with a diverse group of staff in a team environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to use market research to enhance impact of communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Exercise sound judgment and discretion in the completion of assignments and projects.
  • Deep understanding of community relations, social media, public affairs and the importance of representing the university in a progressive and dynamic manner.
  • Good judgment, political acumen and thorough organizational skills.
  • Expert knowledge of CSUSB, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.
  • Expert writing and editorial skills.
  • Demonstrates creativity, inspiration and is prolific in writing.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in communications, journalism or related field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years related experience in speech writing, professional writing and technical writing.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree is preferred.
    • Preferred experience in executive communications for a higher education institution.
    • Passion for public higher education.
    • Working knowledge of University organizational policies, rules, regulations, procurement, purchasing.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU
