Department Summary

Services to Students with Disabilities strives to empower students with disabilities by fostering skills of self-advocacy, resourcefulness, and independence. The SSD office works collaboratively with the campus community to remove barriers and promote an enriched learning environment where students with disabilities can utilize their skills and pursue their academic and personal development goals.


Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Interpreter I will facilitate the integration of hearing-impaired persons into the regular classroom or other instructional settings by using sign language or oral transmitting to interpret spoken or signed communication.

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

• Interpret items that are of a technical or specialized subject matter; concepts; theory and vocabulary requiring special signs.
• Interpreting for deaf groups; signing rapid speech; and oral transmitting for a lip reader
• Assist within the classroom (Includes Office Hours, events, etc.) communication to ensure questions are answered.
• The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned in keeping with the classification.

*A pool of qualified candidates will be established for current and future vacancies. Qualified applicants will be kept active from July 22, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

Key Qualifications

• Working knowledge of the process of interpretation.
• ASL and/or English sign system as required by the student(s) or the assignment.
• The ability to use methods and techniques used in communicating with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers.
• Ability to use the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct.
• Ability to use vocabulary used in the courses to which the Interpreter is assigned.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf Culture.
• Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language.
• Interpret and transliterate between the ASL and sign systems and spoken English at a speed required by the assignment, which may involve a variety of settings such as a classroom, conference, and/or one-on-one meeting.
• Work with students from diverse backgrounds.

Education and Experience

• Combination of Training and Experience: Graduation from an interpreter training program and/or relevant documented interpreting experience.
• Some experience in academic higher education through attendance at a postsecondary educational institution.

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $34.00 - $36.00 per hour
