Responsibilities

The Department of Physics seeks to fill a full-time Assistant Professor position beginning January 4, 2022. The responsibilities of this position include teaching introductory physics courses to freshman and sophomore cadets, directing upper-level physics courses, conducting and leading physics research, as well as fulfilling associated departmental duties. Ideal candidates will have a research background or work experience in the field of Nuclear Physics. If selected, faculty member will be expected to lead research within the Department's Nuclear Enterprise Research Center (NERC), which conducts interdisciplinary cutting-edge research across the nuclear science and policy spectrum, utilizing partnerships across the nuclear weapons complex. The NERC supports the Nuclear Weapons and Strategy Minor and provides research opportunities for cadets of all academic backgrounds and majors.

The United States Air Force Academy, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute to this mission by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 men and women representing every state and several foreign countries. The curriculum includes a core of academic and professional courses, 31 academic majors, and 4 minors.

  • The salary shown is the minimum (Annual) amount to be paid and may be set higher commensurate with individual's qualifications and experience.

  • Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Doctoral degree (must be completed by application deadline) in Physics, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field. U.S. Citizenship is required. Candidates will be required to either possess a current TOP SECRET (or higher) security clearance or the ability to obtain a TOP SECRET (or higher) security clearance.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Applicants will be assessed based on teaching experience, credentials, scholarship, service, and education. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence, innovation, and leadership in teaching and research in the field of nuclear science.     EDUCATION:
    If selected, you will be requested to provide original copies of ALL OFFICIAL transcripts for degrees being pursued or obtained (or letter of degree completion if an OFFICIAL transcript is not available due to recent graduation) to support your educational claims as stated in your curriculum vitae. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a transcript to be considered OFFICIAL, it should be printed on university letterhead and the registrar's official seal/signature must appear on the transcript. Your transcripts must also reflect the degree awarded/conferred date. Transcripts labeled UNOFFICIAL will not be accepted.

    FOREIGN EDUCATION:
    Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying in the form of an "official" statement of U.S. equivalency from a Department of Education approved (non-federal) agency (i.e. AICENACES), who will complete a U.S. Standard of Education Conversion.
