Essential Job Functions:

  • Regularly use postal and metering equipment, with a working knowledge of postal regulations for domestic and international mail and shipping.
  • Organize and maintain an orderly work area keeping accuracy and accountability in mind at all times for financial and related records.
  • Provide assistance in daily, weekly, and monthly money and transaction reconciliations
  • Provide information to customers regarding available services and procedures.
  • Research and present service issues and concerns to Senior Postmaster and/or Operations Coordinator for resolution considerations.
  • Alert supervision of any necessary arrangements for special deliveries and pickups as requested by university departments.
  • Maintain awareness of operating procedures and present areas of concerns for discussion and assessment by Operations Coordinator and/or Senior Postmaster.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to operate postage equipment (sorters, postage meters, automated packing equipment, etc.).
  • Involves the selecting and application of JHU monetary funds in the form of USPS postage by class of mail and associated handling charges.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles for appropriate application of funds for postal services and related chargeback records for accurate transaction of monies.
  • Knowledge of federal postal regulations and policies and procedures for coordinating and providing USPS and internal JHU mail and package services and distribution.
  • Knowledge of federal postal permit regulations, fees, charges and policies and accounting procedures for USPS and JHU funds and service applications.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, on-line and web-based directories, commercial vendor software and equipment for tracking and processing of material shipping and distribution.
  • Ability to read, interpret and implement postal policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid Class A driver’s license with clean driving record for work related errands within Baltimore city and county as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all faculty, staff, students and external contacts both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work and communicate as a team player.

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

2 – 3 years prior experience in a post office or mail room preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
