Position Purpose

Starting in the 2021-2022 school year, the athletic training department is seeking a passionate and enthusiastic full-time athletic trainer for a one year appointment who is interested in being part of a robust health center team working with highly motivated and gifted high school students in a diverse and residential community. This individual will be responsible for providing emergency care, clinical diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic injuries and providing physical health outreach and education services to enhance the orthopedic health PEA students. Under the direction of the director of athletic training services and in collaboration with the strength & conditioning department, coaches, and colleagues in athletic training, will oversee the planning, organization, direction and, when possible, the execution of programs associated the preventing and of orthopedic-related injuries. Key Accountabilities

Clinical/Athletic Training

  • Represent and act as a strong advocate for the best interests of the student’s overall health and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with the Lamont Health and Wellness Center staff in addressing the health and wellness needs of students.
  • Responsible for the evaluation and management of injuries/illnesses that impact physical activity.
  • Provides immediate and emergency care during times of physical activity including being present at high-risk sports during times of play.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of ATC activities and pertinent medical data.
  • Consult with other Academy clinicians (e.g., counseling and psychological services, nurses, mild level providers, Medical Director) about emergency interventions whenever immediate safety and health concerns arise about students.
  • Assist in the fitting of protective athletic gear issued by the Academy
  • Assist in the implementation wrestling weight certification program
  • In concert with the strength & conditioning and athletic training team, develop and refine strength and conditioning injury prevention components as part of the overall sports performance programing.
  • With help of colleagues, develop injury prevention programing for both athletes and non- athletes and, if appropriate, may team teach these classes within the PE/Athletics curriculum
  • In collaboration with the athletic training, coaches, and strength & conditioning departments determine pre-season injury risk reduction screening, administer initial and follow up testing, and examine the utility of testing long term.
  • Potential to partner with the physical education and athletics department to administer an injury screening battery for incoming students engaged in physical activity.
  • Work with colleagues in athletic training to develop and when necessary, oversee transitional return to sport exercises.
  • Collaborate with contracted physical therapist and athletic training staff to coordinate and supervise return to activity testing and clearance.
  • Consult with and provide support, within limits of confidentiality, to parents, faculty, Deans, and Health Services staff regarding individual students.
  • Participate in weekly case management meetings with the department and other allied health professionals (e.g., PT, Strength and Conditioning, and orthopedic physician)
  • Ensure that clinical and educational practices are sensitive to the needs and experiences of our diverse community, including socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, or country of origin.


Administrative

  • Assist in the establishment and enforcement of departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Oversee departmental creation and implementation of injury risk prevention programing and implementation
  • Track injury prevention metrics to determine efficacy of programing and provide seasonal reports to the director of athletic training services


Educational

  • Provides education and serves as a resource for students and faculty on injury/illness prevention and wellness.
  • Provide annual instruction for coaches and physical educators on injury recognition and care.
  • Provide oversight and mentorship to the Graduate Athletic Training Fellow
  • Interact with students, faculty and staff by being present in the daily life of the Academy and participating and/or leading groups, clubs or activities.
  • In addition to injury prevention programing, partner with strength and conditioning and, potentially, other members of the athletic training team to team teach an injury prevention class within the PE department.
  • As part of the departmental focus on research and professional knowledge advancements, may collaborate with institutions of higher education with research line at the direction of the director of athletic training
  • May serve as an advisor to student leaders and clubs working in prevention and education as appropriate and feasible for the needs of the department.
  • Maintain professional licensure in the State of New Hampshire and meeting necessary CEU requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director of athletic training services

Internal & External Contacts

Internal contacts include frequent contact with students, Dean of Students Office, PEA administrative/academic offices, the Lamont Health and Wellness Center, PE and Athletics Department, faculty, coaches, and staff. External contacts may include parents, community health partners, outside organizations, visitors and local community neighbors.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Undergraduate degree minimum
  • Masters preferred
  • NATA-BOC certification and NH state license or the ability to obtain prior to hiring
  • Additional certification in strength and conditioning (such as CSCS) preferred.


Experience

  • 3 - 5 years’ experience working as a certified athletic trainer.
  • Approved clinical instructor experience preferred.
  • Experience in strength and conditioning (private sector or collegiate)
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students by building trust and credibility.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as a strong customer focus.
  • A strict adherence to confidential policies is required.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
