Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a Shift Lead Operator in the Steam Plant. This position is responsible for the shift operation of the steam plant and distribution system to ensure that the plant operates safely, efficiently, and is operated at all times in compliance with all environmental regulations. The steam plant is a 24/7/365 day operation, currently working 12 hour shifts, 4 days on / 4 days off, subject to plant coverage, operating conditions / budget. The main steam plant consists of three 125,000 lbs/hour boilers with typical loads ranging from 35,000 lbs/hour (summer) and up to 135,000 lbs/hour (winter). The Steam Plant Shift Lead Operator works assigned shifts including overtime to cover for sick or vacationing personnel; checks Monroe Park Campus central and local boilers as required; makes minor repairs as needed; interfaces with customer to ensure their needs are met if problems arise during their shift; and is responsible for all actions on their shift or during shift change.

Minimum Hiring Standards

High school graduate, GED, or equivalent required
Extensive knowledge of high-pressure boiler operation and maintenance
Minimum of 5 years as a boiler operator
Computer skills and good understanding of environmental laws relating to a power plant
Must be able to interface with operators and maintenance personnel with a good listening skills
Ability to lift 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and climb ladders
Must have the ability to multiple task and have good problem-solving skills
Virginia Driver’s license required
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

Boiler operator certification a plus
