Responsibilities: The Resident Director (RD) is a 12-month, exempt, live-in position, reporting to the Assistant Director of Residence Life, who is responsible for the overall management of a residential community of up to 500 students.

The RD directly supervises a highly diverse undergraduate, part-time paraprofessional staff of 4-10 Resident Assistants (RAs) and potentially 5-8 Desk Assistants (DAs). Maintain an active presence within the residence hall(s), maintaining regular office hours and completing regular walkthroughs of their community. Establish and maintain communication with residents via hall meetings, floor meetings, individual contact, group meetings, and discussions. Assist, monitor, and support RAs to fulfill programming requirements. Accurately track and assess all programming and community development efforts within their residential community. Address violations of university and residence life policies in accordance with guidance set forth by the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards. Within the limits of professional capabilities, assist students who have academic, vocational, and/or personal concerns. Be aware of potentially serious emotional and medical problems and make appropriate referrals. Manage situations involving various psychological, emotional, medical, or other safety-related emergencies or incidents. Assist in the mediation of roommate and/or group disputes. Assist with annual resident and staff check in and check out process. Complete occupancy reports at the beginning of each semester as coordinated by the Housing Assignments Coordinator. Maintain all appropriate hall documentation related to maintenance and inventory control (i.e., service request log, room condition reports, and log of emergency calls, etc.). Conduct daily building walkthroughs and report any damages or concerns via the department work order system. Follow up on all submitted work orders to ensure completion. Investigate reported damages and implement the damage billing process as necessary and communicate to the Central Office. Conduct monthly room health and safety inspections. Submit monthly charges for fines and damages to the Housing Assignments Coordinator. Manage building key inventory and coordinate and implement key and building FOB distribution. Uphold department key policy and communicate policies to both staff and residents periodically throughout the academic year.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel Services, Counseling, or related field is preferred. Minimum of two (2) years professional Residence Life live-in experience is required. Must have demonstrated experience in university housing. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with faculty, students and staff. This is a 12-month live-on position. Each RD will be provided with a furnished apartment within their assigned residential community. The Office of Residence Life & Housing retains the right to relocate a Resident Director to another building community based on the needs of the department. This will be done in consultation with the Resident Director and sufficient notice will be given. Although the position requires approximately 40 hours per week, the nature of the position, at times, necessitates unpredictable work weeks including nights and weekends, and some weeks requiring more than 40 hours. Must be flexible in work hours to include some evenings, weekends, and holidays. RDs must be willing to serve in an on-call capacity, supporting a 24-hour duty rotation to respond to campus emergencies during all break periods, including holidays and summer. Resident Directors must remain within a certain distance of campus while on duty. This role is considered an “Essential Employee” which may require the incumbent to work on-campus during emergencies and campus closures.
