Qualifications:
Early Childhood Literacy Development is a course intended to complement Jumpstart service and enhance students' ability to work productively with preschool-aged children. The instructor will review key findings in social-emotional and language development, discuss how to observe children’s behaviors to better understand their feelings and goals, and students will learn how children’s temperament differ from birth. Challenges faced by children and families, the role of trauma in explaining difficult child behaviors, and the influence of public policy will be explored. Finally, throughout the course, students will reflect on their personal biases and prejudices and explore ways in which they affect interactions with children.

This course meets in-person on Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm during the Fall 2021 term.

Candidates should have an M.S., M.A. or Ph.D. in a relevant area of Psychology. A Ph.D. in Psychology is desirable. Candidates should have a successful record of teaching experience at the undergraduate level and experience with online/hybrid instruction.
