Position Title:              Vice President for Advancement

Department:                 Advancement

Position Reports to:    President

Supervises:                    Senior Director of Alumni Relations; Director of Annual Giving; Major Gift Officers; Advancement Coordinator; Grants Coordinator; and Office of Communications and Marketing

 

General Position Description

The Vice President for Advancement serves as the chief advancement officer for Cumberland University, leading all alumni and donor engagement as well as the marketing/communications efforts.  Even though the areas of leadership are broad, the Vice President will be principally measured by the amount of funds raised.

 

Standard Expectations

  1. Raise annual gifts to meet the operating needs of the University.
  2. Achieve objectives in major gifts, grants, foundation giving, capital campaigns and gifts-in-kind.
  • Communicate openly and often; engage and collaborate cross-functionally to achieve results.
  • Prepare the Advancement budget and ensure that expectations are met.
  • Value-added member of President’s Cabinet and staff the Board of Trust’s Development Committee.
  • Effectively lead, manage, and develop staff.
  • Results-oriented, data-informed, strategic, and analytical.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the University vision, mission, and values.

    Specific Skills

    • Demonstrated leadership in long-range planning, developing, and implementation of strategies related to fundraising operations of the University or College.
    • Demonstrated experience in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and recognizing donors.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations on philanthropy, grant administration, and charitable tax laws.
    • Proven track record in planning and implementation of multi-million-dollar comprehensive campaigns.
    • Demonstrated leadership of the development and implementation of annual fundraising campaigns.
    • Understanding of donor research and record keeping of gifts.
    • Understanding of and appreciation for the communications and marketing function – principally focused on supporting enrollment services and public relations.
    • Proven ability to foster and reward collaborative teamwork and ability to lead change.

     

    Work Conditions

    • Normal office setting; work evening and weekends as necessary; travel.

     

    Position Prerequisites

    • Education Requirements: Baccalaureate Degree; Graduate Degree Preferred.

    Minimum Work Experience: 5+ years demonstrated success at the director level or above in advancement/development preferably at a university or college.
