The chief objective of this position is to assist in maximizing the value derived from the University’s information systems by designing, implementing, and supporting on-campus and off-campus network infrastructure and telecommunications systems with an emphasis on continuous operation, network and information security, and proactive planning and management. The position manages a skilled team of professionals including network engineers and network analysts, ensuring that all work performed aligns with the department’s service strategy.
Work Tasks
- Responsible for the availability and integrity of all
production network-related hardware, connectivity, and systems, in
support of continuous University operations.
- Conducts needs analysis, establishing key performance indicators,
monitoring and tracking system performance, troubleshooting
outages, performing root cause analysis to identify points of
failure, and capacity planning to support the future needs of the
university.
- Using independent judgment and discretion, design, develop,
enhance, implement, and test resilient network services that have
the potential to impact the entire campus.
- Recommend and implement physical, hardware, and configuration
changes to improve network integrity and performance.
- In conjunction with other IT personnel, plan, coordinate, and
implement upgrades, to ensure the University’s production networks
remain up to date and fully functional.
- Supervise, allocate, and oversee all projects, activities, and
work assignments for the Infrastructure group.
- Collaborate with Manager of Systems and Database Operations on
oversight and capacity planning for data center facilities, for
both continuous operation (highly available services) and for
disaster recovery.
- Using centralized management tools, operationalize and
standardize network management.
- Maintains a high level of knowledge of one or more areas of IT
specialty, including both current and emerging technologies within
the specialty area.
- Participate in technical and/or security-related incident
response situations, which may involve complex campus-wide
issues.
- In conjunction with ITS leadership, participate in
long-term infrastructure technology strategy and planning sessions.
Recommend and prioritize projects.
- Mentor and train new network engineers and analysts; prepare
performance evaluations.
- Work to establish standards and documented best practices within
the team, to provide for a more consistent user experience.
- Develop and monitor service level agreements, ensuring
requirements are met or exceeded.
- Ability to operate in high stress environments and manage crisis
situations.
- Pursues professional development when relevant to current work
specialty area.
- Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and
healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.
- Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required
Facilitation and team-building skills at all levels. Ability to

In depth knowledge of network-related services (examples
include RADIUS, DHCP, DNS, 802.1x).
Advanced to expert skill level with the administration and
maintenance of networks in a multi-vendor environment.
Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical
and non-technical personnel, including the ability to write complex
technical documentation.
Ability to learn and gain a deep understanding of all facets of
enterprise networks.
Demonstrable analytical and problem solving skills, particularly as
it relates to network administration.

Required Education
Master’s Degree in Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field; or a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field, and work experience at a level which equates to an advanced degree.
Preferred Education
Additional coursework in information technology. Possess or working toward the following certifications: CompTIA (A+, Network+, Security+), CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, or other networking certifications.
Experience Required
Experience in Data Center design and support.
Experience leading, supervising, and facilitating technical teams,
with a focus on resilient networks, secure network access, and
network security in an enterprise environment.
Demonstrated experience designing, building, maintaining,
migrating, tuning, administering, and supporting a multi-vendor
network environment (such as Extreme, Aruba/HP, and Cisco) in
enterprise environments.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple data centers, working
with emerging data center technologies, cloud-hosting, and network
virtualization.
Experience monitoring and administering network security and
responding to security incidents.
Experience Preferred
Experience working in Higher Education.
