University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus

The University of Minnesota Medical School invites applications for a Regional Campus Dean to lead and oversee operations on the Duluth Campus (https://med.umn.edu/about/duluth-campus). The University of Minnesota Medical School operates as a 1 school, 2 campus model. The first two years of basic medical and clinical sciences are offered to 130 students on the Duluth Campus; some third and fourth-year opportunities are linked to the campus or the Duluth region as well. The campus emphasis on rural family medicine and its intersections with other medical specialties results in an unprecedented Family Medicine match rate for matriculating Duluth students (35-50% of each class). The Regional Campus Dean is responsible and accountable for the performance of the campus in fulfilling its site-specific missions: to be a leader in educating physicians with an emphasis on family medicine; to serve the health care needs of rural Minnesota and Native American communities; and remain consistent with the high standards of the University of Minnesota in discovering and disseminating knowledge through research. The Regional Campus Dean, in conjunction with the Medical School Dean, will craft a vision for the continued excellence of the Duluth campus and growth in the research mission. This involves identifying, strategizing, and overseeing major changes and improvements in infrastructure necessary to sustain and grow the work of the campus and advance Duluth campus accomplishments over time. It will also require aligning efforts and funding sources with the statewide U of M Medical School. In partnership with the Department Heads on the Duluth Campus, the Regional Campus Dean will ensure compliance of the campus with LCME accreditation standards, a compliant learning environment and a rigorous curriculum. In addition, they will encourage and enhance the support for faculty, staff and student efforts in education, research, and scholarship, and advance efforts to increase diversity, equity and inclusion on the campus.

Required qualifications: a MD/DO, PhD or MD-PhD with a record of teaching and working with health professionals or medical students and/or successfully conducting research, experience or knowledge in primary care, rural health and Native American health, and demonstrated ability to supervise multiple employees and manage teams.

Preferred qualifications: A candidate with experience in primary care, rural health, or Native American health, with a record of promoting diversity and demonstrated success in obtaining federal funding for research is preferred. Individuals with a highly collaborative, inclusive, and effective leadership style, including demonstrated support for shared governance is sought. The candidate should have demonstrated ability and commitment to use data to problem-solve, and the ability to prioritize institutional goals across complex organizational relationships. Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening skills are important with the ability to effectively work internal and external to the campus. The capacity to bring together constituent groups, demonstrate collaboration, and advance goals, as well as to navigate the potential changes in medical policy, healthcare politics, and healthcare delivery systems of the future, is needed. A successful record of fundraising will be invaluable.

Application: Applicants must complete the online application found at https://humanresources.umn.edu/jobs by searching in the keywords field for 340896. Applications must include: a curriculum vitae; a cover letter describing why the applicant is interested in the position of Regional Campus Dean and what past leadership and/or administrative positions the applicant has held, particularly speaking to the preferred qualifications for the position. Additional questions can be directed to Search Committee Chairs Drs. Jean Regal or Sara Zimmer (jregal@d.umn.edu; szimmer3@d.umn.edu) or staff support Lori Davis (lurinda@d.umn.edu).
