Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Success, the Athletic Director provides the overall vision, leadership and oversight of Harford Community College’s NJCAA Division I athletics program and is responsible for the general oversight, administration, and promotion of the athletics program. This individual is considered a senior administrator in the Division of Student Affairs and works collaboratively across campus on strategic initiatives designed to promote student success and support the college as the anchor institution for Harford County.

The Director is responsible for implementing and executing a vision for the College’s Athletics program for inclusion in the College’s strategic plan; expanding its fundraising, marketing, media and community relations while effectively managing the program’s budget and finances; and modeling exemplary professional behavior to enhance the College’s commitment to excellent sportsmanship, both on and off the field/court, and community service. Further, the Director has oversight of athletics compliance and reporting, including Title IX compliance for athletic programs, and athletics facilities including the APGFCU Arena, Harford Sports Complex and the Harford Stadium. The Athletic Director will not serve as a coach of an athletic team, either head or assistant, except in extenuating or emergency situations.

Duties include:

  • Managing and supervising all athletics staff and head coaches, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Overseeing outside usage of athletic facilities, including adult community league rentals, Harford County Public Schools usage, and other rental utilization.
  • Overseeing the academic success programs and services for student athletes.
  • Overseeing athletics compliance and reporting, including Title IX, and assuring diversity and inclusion in the College’s athletic programs and activities.
  • Overseeing fundraising, media, and community relations for the athletics program, working closely with the Office of the HCC Foundation and Office of Communications.
  • Modeling and sustaining professional decorum and sportsmanship both on and off the field/court, and promoting community engagement for staff, coaches, and student athletes
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive professional development program for coaching staff.
  • Maintaining the College’s memberships in Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Region 20 of the NJCAA.
  • Developing and managing the athletics program budget and finances responsibly.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

This is an exempt, administrator position.

A bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration, Higher Education Administration, Education or a related field and a minimum of five to seven years of relevant senior-level athletic administration and management are required.

The Athletics Director must demonstrate a proven commitment to student success and development, both academically and athletically, and dedication to working collaboratively with other College departments and divisions to ensure that student-athletes are successfully integrated into the vibrant life of the campus community.

Other requirements include:

  • Proven fiscal skills, including experience in budgeting and fiscal management and the ability to adhere to all finance and budget policies and procedures.
  • Proven experience and success in fundraising and donor relations.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Expertise in compliance with NJCAA regulations and Title IX, ensuring equity and diversity of department staffing, funding and operations.
  • The ability to manage the administrative team, with an emphasis on setting strategy, identifying team-wide process improvement and leading projects, including knowledge of human resources best practices and experience with supervision and performance evaluation of staff.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Proven leadership skills, a collaborative management approach and superior relationship-building skills.

Experience with strategic planning, familiarity with program evaluation and assessment, Title IX, and NJCAA experience are preferred.
