Job Details

Haverford College was founded in 1833 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Haverford is exclusively an undergraduate institution and is nearly entirely residential (excluding students studying abroad). Founded in 1885, Bryn Mawr College is a women's college at the undergraduate level. Like Haverford, most undergraduate students live on campus with approximately 1,200 students living in campus residences in a typical year. Bryn Mawr also offers graduate programs to approximately 350 students; none of the graduate students reside on campus.

Both Colleges offer rigorous liberal arts curriculum to approximately 1,300 – 1,400 undergraduate students who hail from varied ethnic, religious, and geographic backgrounds, including substantial numbers of students from international locations.

The campuses are about a mile and a half apart in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, approximately ten (10) miles from downtown (commonly known as Center City). Haverford's campus is a 210-acre campus with 1.7 million square feet across 50 buildings. Bryn Mawr's campus is approximately 135 acres with about 1.3 million square feet across 40 buildings.

The Position

The executive director is responsible for the effective planning, organizing, coordinating, leadership, and general oversight of the Colleges' campus safety departments and management of the personnel therein. Primary areas of responsibility include overall campus safety and security, fire safety, access systems, environmental health and safety standards, emergency management and planning, and parking programs. Establishing and enhancing a supportive, anti-racist, and socially-conscious framework for the departmental work and positive relationships with various constituencies of the Colleges—such as students, faculty, staff, and neighbors, as well as local, regional and national authorities—is important. Both of the Colleges' departments are staffed with non-sworn campus safety officers. The Campus Safety departments provide 24-hour, 7-day per week, year-round service for their respective campus, including being first responders to all emergency calls.

This position reports to the senior vice president for administration and finance at Haverford College and equally to the chief financial officer/chief administrative officer at Bryn Mawr College. While certain policies, practices, and protocols can differ between the two Colleges, much of work, oversight, and best practice objectives are similar. The director oversees a total of 45 staff across both campuses.

This position requires an individual who is forward-looking and operates as an inclusive leader. The expectation of the Colleges is that the executive director will play a key role in creating a vision for how the campus safety departments can add value at Haverford and Bryn Mawr. In addition, the executive director will need to maintain anti-racist departmental practices, focus on care for the marginalized communities on both campuses, and hold every member of the departments accountable to standards of inclusivity, anti-racism, and social awareness. The executive director will share a modern sensibility of a campus safety department's role in providing a safe and secure living and working environment that is conducive to learning and is consistent with the goals, values, and policies of the institutions in an environment of respect and support. The primary concern is the wellbeing of the Colleges' students, staff, faculty, and visitors.


The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience (e.g., mental health and other forms of personal crisis response, safety/security, emergency response, etc.) with preference for experience serving in a leadership role. A master's degree in a relevant discipline can substitute for two (2) years of work experience. The executive director must have an understanding and sensitivity to racial equity and restorative justice, experience with behavioral/mental health crises, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community development. The executive director will have a deep commitment to and demonstrated experience fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion; an ability to interact professionally with a wide range of people and to work in a shared decision-making environment; and the ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner. Further, the ability to multi-task, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments; to maintain calm under stressful circumstances and to clearly convey thoughts and instructions to others both verbally and in writing; and to sustain the highest level of ethics and integrity, as well as possess knowledge of and facility with contemporary computer programs and applications are all requirements of the next director. The new executive director must have or be able to obtain a valid driver's license, and ability to pass a Haverford College MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) check; obtain and maintain clear reports for Pennsylvania Act 153 Child Abuse Clearances; and possess and maintain First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications.
