The Business Intelligence Developer works with subject matter experts from all areas across the University, including but not limited to: Academic Affairs; Business, Finance, and Administration; Advancement; Enrollment and the Student Experience; IVMF ; Human Resources, and the University’s schools and colleges. This work includes integration of data driven business processes, development of data interfaces, critical tactical and strategic analytical activities, data security and access, as well as development of in-depth dashboards and reports.

The Business Intelligence Developer performs development (coding), analysis (troubleshooting), and production support, and provides overall expertise in the area of data warehouse and reporting applications. The duties include maintaining and enhancing data warehouse structures for all Syracuse University enterprise data warehouses, the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) integration between most all enterprise source systems and structures, and providing production support (including after normal working hours), as well as developing reports and dashboards (MyReports). The current ETL tool used for this development and integration is IBM DataStage.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

• Two (2) plus years of relevant work experience.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Experience with or knowledge of most of the following software, languages, and tools, or similar products is preferred.

• Relational database and SQL skills experience required (Oracle and SQLServer).

• Reporting development tools experience required (e.g., Tableau, SSRS, and Hyperion Interactive Reporting tool preferred).

• Experience in developing legible and well-structured scripts and queries in SQL .

• Knowledge of basic data modeling techniques.

• Extract Transform Load ( ETL ) experience preferred ( IBM DataStage preferred).

• Strong aptitude to learn and adapt to technology.

• Linux and windows operating system experience preferred.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written, verbal and active listening required.

• Ability to prioritize work, have attention to detail and flexibility in work assignments required.

• Ability to work independently as well as on a team required.

• Ability to communicate progress/status of assigned responsibilities on an ongoing basis to management.

• Experience developing thorough documentation to be used for supporting production applications.

• Thorough understanding and demonstrated use of the SDLC .

• Ability to mentor/train others required.

• Higher Education experience preferred.

• Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and modify relational and multidimensional database structures, relationships, data flows and data interfaces within the data warehouse as needed.

• Understand thoroughly the architecture, data structures and fundamental design principles of the data warehouse.

• Use programming languages, software development methods, “best practice” programming techniques, and department standards guides to develop new data warehouse structures and reports and to modify existing ones to meet user requirements, to function efficiently and effectively, and to comply with departmental standards.

• Analyze and modify the data structures within the data warehouse to adapt them to the university’s business needs and add enhanced functionality to store, manage, and track data related to all aspects of the university’s mission and operations, and to support reporting and analysis.

• Participate in requirements gathering and analysis, technical design, build, testing, documentation and project planning.

• Provide production support and on-call support including problem analysis and resolution, including during and after work hours.

• Monitor and update issue logs with status and resolution information per project standards, department standards, and/or as requested.

• Maintain up-to-date status on requests in tracking system(s), issue logs, etc. as per department standards and/or as requested by manager.

• Consult with clients, DBAs, FBAs, PeopleSoft Developers etc., to gather information about needs, objectives, functions, performance expectations, and input and output requirements.

• Review, analyze, and understand functional requirements and functional specifications documents to determine whether all required elements are included, and if not, request that clients revise specifications by adding missing elements. Identify and propose technical alternatives to solving client requests and system problems, and recommend the best alternative by weighing client requirements, functionality, performance, time to implement, long-term maintainability, extensibility, and customer self-sufficiency.

• Maintain proficiency in current data warehouse development platforms, languages, and opportunities.

• Maintain proficiency in integration methods required to link the data warehouse to other systems.

• Research and stay abreast of changes in data warehouse technology and collaborate with manager and colleagues in how to implement and leverage the new and changing technology.
