Associate Research Scientist

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Center for Signal Processing, Imaging, Reasoning, and Learning (SPIRAL) at Northeastern University (NU) has an opening for an Associate Research Scientist, available starting on May 1st, 2021 or later. SPIRAL conducts fundamental and interdisciplinary applied research in the areas of computational modeling, computer vision, distributed computing, image analysis, machine learning, optimization, and signal processing, with application areas spanning affective computing, biomedical imaging, modeling, and simulation, cyber-human systems including brain interfaces and human robot collaboration, geolocalization and positioning systems, neuroscience, wireless communications and networks. SPIRAL is a federation of collaborating research laboratories that jointly strive to conduct rigorous application-driven computational modeling and inference research in diverse contexts, and are committed to providing an inclusive research, academic, and personal development environment for a diverse group of talented individuals at undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral training stages. More information about SPIRAL can be found online.

Responsibilities:
The Associate Research Scientist is expected to lead and take part in teams of researchers focusing on several projects simultaneously, working on the development of novel machine learning, signal and image processing/analysis, statistical modeling and inference, optimization methods and algorithms for various application domains. Projects involve collaboration with partner institutions, nationally and internationally. The primary duties include the advancement of the state of the art in theory and practice in designated research areas, the preparation and execution of experimental paradigms and experiments to test proposed approaches; preparation of scientific publications for dissemination of research results in scholarly venues; assisting the PIs with the preparation of scientific grant proposals for funding, lab management, and graduate student advising; and when permitted by the university leading external project funding application efforts as PI or taking part as Co-PI.

Qualifications:
Must have a PhD in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related area. Strong theoretical foundations in statistical signal/image processing or analysis, or machine learning are required, as demonstrated by at least two years of postdoctoral research in these or closely related areas. Demonstrated experience with Matlab and Python programming environments, and a demonstrated track record of scholarly publications in reputable venues, such as IEEE journals and conferences are also required. Experience in team-based software development and version control tools, such as GIT, are strongly desired. Excellent command of spoken and written English, as well as demonstrated ability to execute independent research that has resulted in high quality published articles

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with biomedical time-series analysis, image analysis sensor fusion, recursive Bayesian state estimation techniques, such as extensions of the Kalman Filter, neural network models for machine learning and signal analysis are additional desired qualifications.

Salary Grade:
11

Additional Information:
The salary will be commensurate with background and experience, and the Associate Research Scientist will receive full benefits that Northeastern University offers in accordance with the position and appointment term. Multi-year contract renewals are possible. A minimum commitment of 2 years is desired from the candidates.
