About the Opportunity:
The School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs (SPPUA) in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University, seeks exceptional applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Professor of Practice position in Public Policy and Economic Justice with an expected start date of Fall 2021.

The School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs is an interdisciplinary community offering graduate programs in Public Policy and Administration, Urban Planning and Policy, Urban Informatics, and International Affairs, a joint JD/MS in Law and Public Policy, and undergraduate programs in Human Services, Urban Studies, and Law and Public Policy.

The position will support the University's commitment to innovation and inclusion in teaching as well as the School's commitment to social justice and racial justice through interdisciplinary transformative thinking and problem solving on issues of pressing concern to society at local, state, national, and international level. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished professional record with extensive expertise conducting policy-relevant economic analysis, an established capacity for developing researcher-practitioner partnerships, and demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and leadership with a focus on economic equity and racial justice. We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching and applied research interests in one or more of the following areas: inequities and disparities in health, income/wealth, the labor market, education, housing, sustainability and resilience. Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education.

Responsibilities:
This position has three main components:

Teaching: The Professor of Practice will deliver outstanding instruction to graduate students and some advanced undergraduates, including the ability to teach practitioner-oriented courses to master's students with diverse backgrounds and professional interests. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach courses related to economics for policy and planning, public policy analysis, program evaluation, and quantitative methods/econometrics, as well as electives in their areas of interest or expertise. Instructional formats include classroom, online, hybrid, and capstone (e.g. project-oriented) teaching. The anticipated course load is two courses in each of the fall and spring semesters.

Research: The Professor of the Practice will contribute to our applied research and experiential mission, with research that focuses on economic inequities, racial justice, and applied policy issues as well as government institutions and/or the nonprofit sector. Vital to the success of our program initiatives, the Professor of Practice will advance our existing relationships in local, national, and international settings to lead applied research projects and engage in, impactful policy-relevant analysis. This will involve working closely with and contributing to our existing research centers engaged in related work including the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, the Boston Area Research Initiative, the Social Impact Lab and the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research.

Service: The Professor of Practice will contribute to advising and mentoring our diverse students and will be expected to develop new initiatives to complement current programs. The faculty member will also assist with student recruitment, retention and curriculum development. Depending on the candidate's expertise, there is also the potential for future leadership in departmental and institutional structures of faculty governance.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Public Policy, Economics or other related area by the appointment start date as well as teaching excellence or potential for teaching excellence is required. The candidate must also have a minimum of five years of work experience post-Ph.D. The ideal candidate will have expertise working in an applied research setting such as a government agency, think-tank, or academic research center on issues related to public policy, social justice, socio-economic inequality, or racial/ethnic/gender/LGBTQ+ disparities. Prior leadership or potential for leadership in developing researcher-practitioner partnerships as well as a well-developed network across sectors in one or more policy issues is also desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills and proven teaching proficiency are expected. Familiarity with online teaching is beneficial.
