Job Description

The Deputy Commandants of Cadets report to the Commandant and are responsible for providing leadership and oversight to a fulltime Corps of Cadets. The Corps of Cadets was established in 1872. The Virginia Tech 1,100 plus member Corps of Cadets offers student cadets invaluable opportunities for superior leadership training and individual and career development. Virginia Tech is the first land grant university in the nation to combine the leader development curriculum of a Corps experience with academic coursework in leadership to award a minor in leadership studies.
Core Responsibilities: Develops and implements programs and services to achieve the Corps' mission to graduate global ethical leaders of character who are instilled with the values and skills essential for leadership success in service to the nation. Develops, schedules, implements, instructs, and assesses curriculum for weekly accredited professional development courses. Advises cadets on individual career goals and plans. Guides student development in skills required for success as leaders and professionals; academic success, cultural awareness, self-responsibility, and social interaction. Provides appropriate counseling and referral for individual students when needed. Develop general knowledge of all departmental functions and processes in order to serve as resource to others or to act in place of the Commandant as required or directed. Cultivate on and off campus relationships and partnering efforts that facilitate the achievement of institutional Corps' goals and objectives. Oversees and/or participates in cadet led physical fitness activities and health and wellness education. Collaborates with the Commandant, VTCC staff, VTCC Alumni, Inc., university academic and student support functions, and other organizations as necessary to establish and implement short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans; program development, implementation, and evaluation; policy review and development; and operating procedures. Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness; affects changes required for improvement. Ensures compliance with state and university policies in department operations. Develops and supports diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's Degree. Prior military experience as a commissioned officer, such as in the grade of O5 or O6. Experience in creating and implementing programs. Experience in the effective supervision of staff and students. Demonstrated commitment to diversity. Strong oral and written communications skills to include instructional and presentation experience. Collaborative work style. Ability to work effectively with all university constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

Military command experience. Experience with a senior military college or federal service academy with recent active service. Previous experience with a ROTC program and/or graduates of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.
