Position Summary:

In the Harlow Lab, feeds animals and maintains animal quarters, records, and supplies to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and in support of research and instruction.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Well qualified candidates will have experience in a laboratory animal research facility, veterinary clinic or accredited zoo environment. This background is preferred, but willing to consider candidates comfortable around animals.

License or Certificate:

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level is preferred, but not required.

Additional Information:

Animal Research Technician-Entry: Incumbent will work with our training unit and experienced staff to learn the tasks to be performed, including but not limited to nonhuman primate handling and care techniques, utilizing standard safety practices and precautions, and recognizing nonhuman primate behavior considered symptomatic of an illness or injury. The incumbent will undergo extensive training to obtain proficiency in the care of nonhuman primates to perform these tasks under limited supervision.

Employee must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates and with wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Must be TB negative.

Employee will be required to provide written documentation to University Health Services showing one of the following: 1) receipt of measles vaccination; 2) laboratory evidence of immunity to measles; or 3) laboratory confirmation of measles disease.

Individuals without the aforementioned documentation will need to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, may need to be immunized.

With or without accommodation an employee must be able to consistently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, sometimes at shoulder level; must be able to stand, stoop, reach, bend, etc.

Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.
