Department of Photography, Yale University Art Gallery

The Marcia Brady Tucker Curatorial Fellowship in Photography is a full-time, one-year fellowship, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, intended for an emerging professional scholar in the History of Photography considering a curatorial career. Reporting to the Richard Benson Associate Curator of Photography and Digital Media and working closely with colleagues across and beyond Yale University, the Fellow will be fully integrated into the Department of Photography and will gain broad, hands-on experience with photographic collections in an academic museum with a focus on object-based teaching.

The Fellow provides organizational, teaching, and project support related to the Gallery’s photography collection; responds to queries about the collection; and interacts with scholars, students, and the public on matters concerning the collection. Responsibilities include coordinating faculty requests for teaching with photographs, managing and overseeing class visits utilizing photographs from the collection in a busy study room; and serving as the primary liaison between the Photography department and faculty teaching from the collection, all while ensuring the special care, security, and proper user handling of the collection. The Fellow also assists with cataloguing new acquisitions using The Museum System (TMS), preparing the published list of departmental acquisitions in the annual Bulletin, and conducting essential research.

A master’s degree in Art History or related field; a demonstrated interest in the history and materiality of photography and a commitment to object-based teaching; and the ability to handle original works of art with care and to safely lift boxes up to 35 lbs. several times throughout the day, are required. Successful candidates will have excellent communication, interpersonal, research, and writing skills, and a demonstrated ability to communicate with museum staff and the public in a knowledgeable and professional manner.  Emerging scholars with an advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or a related academic field, as well as a strong interest in the history of photography and teaching with collections are particularly encouraged to apply. We welcome and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, especially those from traditionally underrepresented groups in the museum field.

Expected start date: September 1, 2021

Salary range: $40,000 – $50,000, commensurate with education and experience; a competitive benefits package, including health insurance; and a modest professional development stipend. For more details, see https://postdocs.yale.edu/postdocs/benefits.

Interested and qualified applicants must submit a CV with the names of three references and a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s interest in the fellowship. Email applications (in PDF format) to: Judy Ditner, The Richard Benson Associate Curator of Photography and Digital Media, judy.ditner@yale.edu, by Friday, June 21, 2021.
