Assistant Dean of Students - Investigator

Butler University is currently looking for an Assistant Dean of Students-Investigator to join the Division of Student Affairs team. Through BU BeWell, Student Affairs empowers learners to embrace and value difference, take responsibility for their own paths, grow as individuals, and productively contribute to communities. The new Assistant Dean of Students will play a key role in advancing this work. This individual will be responsible for the investigation of incidents relating to the sexual misconduct process, bias-related incidents, and reports of harassment and discrimination.

Responsibilities:

• Primarily responsible for the prompt, thorough, impartial, and equitable investigations of allegations of harassment and discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, genetics, sex, gender-identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ancestry, veteran, or disability status
• Authors timely, professionally written, comprehensive, unbiased investigative reports; analyzes and logically comes to conclusions and investigation outcomes
• Acts as an objective and unbiased party through all aspects of an investigation, while promoting a fair and neutral process for all parties involved
• Communicates and consults regularly with the Dean of Students, Title IX Coordinator and General Counsel on updates regarding complaints received, status of allegations, and investigations in process. Establishes working relationships with BUPD, IMPD, and external/outside agencies
• Stays current with best practices involving Civil Rights Investigations and relevant federal and state legislation and regulations. This includes engaging annually in professional development related to investigations.
• Additional areas of responsibility include: conduct program assessment, educational conduct programming development, and annual Student Handbook revision.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, social work, counseling, or related field is required; or a juris doctorate form an accredited law school
• Minimum of three years of professional experience is required. Preference is given to candidates with experience working in the higher education setting
• Experience in student conduct or experience conducting investigations in the university or college setting is preferred
• Title IX Investigator training certification is highly desirable

The successful candidate will possess the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

• In-depth knowledge of the federal and state laws and regulatory guidance pertaining to civil rights, discrimination and harassment, as applied to college and universities
• Demonstrated experience and ability in understanding the impact of trauma; managing confidential information; independently and efficiently managing a a case from reported disclosure though resolution, and maintaining a significant caseload
• Extensive knowledge of the elements of determining relevancy of information related to reports of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation allegations
• Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, superior judgment, analytical skills, and neutrality in highly sensitive situations involving a diverse body of community members
• Tact, discretion, professionalism, maturity, and outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
