Job Summary

The Plumber is responsible for providing the full range of skilled plumbing work including the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel, and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration-related plumbing systems, to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. The position makes decisions based upon sound maintenance practices.

The Maintenance and Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides services to a University campus spread across nine sites comprised of +150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than seven million gross square feet. Maintenance & Operations employs approximately 250 full time permanent staff and up to an additional nine part-time, seasonal, or contract staff. In FY20-21, the assigned operating budget for the unit is $49 million not including funds associated with purchased utilities or maintenance and repair projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs various types of preventive maintenance including: starting/stopping equipment, general cleaning, removing/installing serviceable parts, and lubricating. Identifies problems and needed repairs
  • Completes necessary repairs to plumbing, fixtures, and related equipment as requested by work orders
  • Uses hand and power tools for the completion of plumbing fixtures, installations, related repairs, installation/removal of parts and hardware
  • Inspects plumbing, related equipment, systems, and areas to identify problems and needed repairs
  • Disables and clearly identifies (lock out and tag out) unsafe equipment, and immediately notifies appropriate personnel
  • Reports problems and needed repairs to be documented and scheduled
  • Records work details in log sheets, and keeps time records to assists in completion of documentation
  • Uses computer for communication, for research of parts and associated equipment, documentation of job specific details and recording time logs
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings, trainings and functions
  • Maintains clean work areas, tools, equipment and associated structures


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade
  • Base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes
  • Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems
  • Ability to perform applicable welding work
  • Ability to make rough sketches of plumbing installations read and works from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; and estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work
  • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record keeping systems, and prepare standard reports
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semiskilled assistants
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
Required Qualifications

Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumbers apprenticeship program. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

Preferred Qualifications

Four years’ experience as a journey-level plumber

Classification: Plumber
Anticipated Hiring Range: up to $5,900/month
Salary Range: $5,742/month - $7,414/month
