Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Auburn University seeks to fill the position of Director, Clinical Laboratory Sciences. This individual is responsible for the direction and management of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences ( CLS ) program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ( DCB ) within the College of Sciences and Mathematics ( COSAM ). The CLS program includes two majors Clinical Laboratory Sciences ( LBSC ) and Medical Laboratory Sciences ( MLSC ).

Essential Functions

The Director serves as an instructor for courses essential to these majors, including the preparation and presentation of course/instructional materials (using in-person and online delivery methods as necessary). This also includes maintenance/updates of courses through Canvas course management system, grading, student assistance and feedback, e-mail and other correspondence. The Director of CLS prepares and maintains affiliation agreements and maintains communication with internship sites. Attends and participates in required annual review meetings of internship affiliates. Serves as instructor of record for courses corresponding to internship credits. Obtains affiliate site transcripts, enabling final conferral of the Auburn University MLSC degree. The Director evaluates and prepares annual assessment reports regarding learning objectives and learning outcomes as they result to the MLSC and LBSC programs. Evaluates and reports programmatic data to contribute to the DCB Academic Program Reviews every six years, including but not limited to student enrollment, student progress, graduation rates, program space, resources, equipment, and program budget and expenditures. The Director supervises the Lambda Tau professional honor society.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Applicants must have a thorough understanding of: 1) all aspects of laboratory safety, including but not limited chemical safety, handling of blood borne pathogens, biosafety, etc., 2) thorough knowledge of laboratory preparation and materials (i.e. blood smears, reagent preparation, disinfection procedures, etc.), 3) thorough understanding and knowledge of laboratory equipment, including but not limited microscopes with slides, centrifuges, cholestechs, fibrometers, spectrophotometers, Randox analyzers, Beckman-Coulter counters, cell washers, water baths, vortex mixers, pipettes, micropipettes, vacutainer tubes, needles, and blood collection tubes, and 4) knowledge of ASCP eligibility requirements as it relates to student training.

The successful applicant must also be a Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification, including sections in Blood Bank, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Urinalysis and Body Fluids, and Laboratory Operations.

Desired Qualifications

In addition to the required Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Science, a Master’s degree in Public Health is desirable.
