Working Title: Coordinator of Indigenous Student Support & Wellness Official Title: Student Services Program Manager I Employment Class: Non-Instructional Academic Staff FTE: 1.0 Compensation: $45,000 - $50,850 FLSA Status: Exempt Terms of Employment: Annual, Fixed Term-Renewable Position Summary:
The Coordinator of Indigenous Student Support & Wellness reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) of the Division of Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence (ASIE) and Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). This position's primary purpose is to support Indigenous students (Indigenous to the Americas, but particularly Wisconsin) at UW Oshkosh through the provisions of academic support, cultural consultation, outreach, programming, and advocacy. A thorough and nuanced understanding must inform this work focused on the Indigenous students' unique lived experiences, particularly in white-dominated institutional spaces. Understanding the impact of racial trauma, anti-Indigeneity, Indigenous identity development including Two-Spirit and intersecting identities, intergenerational trauma, and settler colonialism, will be critical to success in this position.
Additionally, the position will provide personal, cultural, academic, and financial aid advisement to Indigenous students. The position will provide Indigenous students with outreach to tribal higher education programs to enhance support, coordinate tutoring and study groups with the Center for Academic Resources (CAR) and serve as an advocate and liaison with university staff and faculty. This position will create and maintain an advisory council and communication network at UWO that reviews Indigenous students' needs while maintaining collaboration to enhance support services, including traveling time to off-campus locations. Further, this position will evaluate retention services and provide leadership regarding Indigenous students' status to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence and Chief Diversity Officer.
Academic Support (35%)
a. Evaluate retention services and provide leadership regarding Indigenous students' status to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence and Chief Diversity Officer and other duties outlined by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence and Chief Diversity Officer. a) Coordinate tutoring and study groups for Indigenous students with the Center for Academic Resources (CAR). b) Coordinate Academic Retention Interventions with other departments in ASIE c) Collaborate with the Indigenous Studies Committee. b. Provide personal, cultural, academic, and financial aid advisement to Indigenous students. a) Coordinate with Financial Aid to assist Indigenous students with financial aid issues; b) Identify the appropriate services to support students academically; c) Coordinate with Student Support Services when there are shared student(s); d) Offer support and opportunities for collaboration to the Intertribal Student Council (ITSC); e) Coordinate activities as it relates to Indigenous culture; f) Refer/coordinate students other departments and programs across campus.
Individual and Community Relationship Building (35%)
a. Develop an advisory council and communication network to review Indigenous students' needs while maintaining collaboration to enhance support services, including travel time to off-campus locations. b. Serve as an advocate and liaison for Indigenous students with university staff and faculty: a) Meet with faculty to discuss individual student academic and nonacademic challenges; b) Coordinate Indigenous events/services with the University community; c) When appropriate assist faculty with cultural engagement in their classrooms. c. Provide outreach to tribal higher education programs to enhance support for Indigenous students a) Maintain face-to-face relationships within Indigenous communities and with student families; b) Coordinate with Admissions staff to represent UW Oshkosh at college fairs and higher education forums; c) Develop and implement a native alumni program to support Indigenous students; d) Connect and serve as an advocate for the Inter-Tribal Student Council (ITSC).
Wellness, Outreach & Training (30%)
a. Provide culturally responsive and identity-informed individual (including group and single session) support to students, prioritizing Indigenous students' intervention provisions. b. Act as a liaison and referral source for students who feel culturally excluded from other wellness and mental health services on campus. c. Provide workshops, outreach, programs, liaison, and teaching activities that explicitly center the care and holistic wellness of Indigenous students. d. Provide training and supervision for interns and practicum students, such as co-leading circles or community groups. Provide culturally responsive and identity-informed space for the campus community, primarily to Indigenous students.
• Bachelor's degree
• Experience consulting/liaising with campus and/or community partners serving Indigenous populations
• Experience providing outreach programming focused on the holistic wellness needs of American Indian/Indigenous people
• Effective communication skills, both intracultural and cross-cultural
• Experience leading circles and/or community building groups
• Awareness of contemporary Indigenous issues and the importance of the complex history of Indigenous peoples.
•Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary issues.
•Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Master of Social Work, Master of Counseling, or a related field
• Experience with Indigenous post-secondary students and with tribal higher education programs, schools, communities, and landscapes
• Knowledge or lived experience of the Tribal Nations in Wisconsin
• Experience in a university student services environment
• Two years of experience providing wellness services to Indigenous clients
• Ability to communicate and apply knowledge of the mental health impacts of systemic racism on Indigenous people
• Strong commitment and demonstrated ability to enact social justice principles; dismantling racism and navigate layers of identity experienced by Indigenous students, including but not limited to connection to ancestral land, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, class, and nationality
• Demonstrated ability to consult with multiple stakeholders and clients' families regarding students' mental health needs
