Associate Teaching Professor in Construction Management
The Department of Construction Management at the University of Washington seeks applications for one full-time, non-tenure-track position in Construction Management at the rank of Associate Teaching Professor. This is a 9-month (Sept 16th - June 15th), multi-year appointment with an anticipated start date of September 2021. This position is for a three-year term with the possibility of renewals; it carries full fringe benefits and is promotable.

Our Department resides in the College of Built Environments and enrolls over 180 students, divided between undergraduate and graduate programs. The department has nine full-time and several part-time faculty and is supported by a dozen affiliate faculty. Our educational offerings include a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management (with an Architecture dual-degree option), an in-person Master of Science in Construction Management, an online Master of Science in Construction Management (co-offering with Civil and Environmental Engineering), and a college-wide Ph.D. in the Built Environment; we also offer a minor in Construction Management for students in other majors, and a certificate of construction management in partnership with UW Continuum College. Our instruction duties strongly support an ACCE-accredited Bachelor of Science degree, which carries an outstanding reputation within the industry for developing graduates that are ready for entry-level management positions. The focus of the undergraduate program is building construction, but we also offer elective courses on heavy civil construction. Applicants should expect that this position includes participation in instructional duties and service. Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, experience teaching at both undergraduate and graduate-level in higher education; experience in accreditation processes; and progressively responsible higher education and/or industry experience and knowledge of North American construction practices. The individual selected for this position will be expected to communicate effectively and incorporate information technology into the classroom, and to dedicate full time to teaching broadly and effectively and supporting the department’s instructional mission in ways broader than conventional classroom instruction; instructional duties may comprise a variety of teaching formats and media, including undergraduate and graduate curriculum for matriculated students, and special training or continuing education for industry practitioners. Current instructional needs include but are not limited to coursework on topics, such as heavy civil construction practices, building construction materials and methods, temporary structures, and soils and foundations. In addition, a full-time Associate Teaching Professor would be expected to perform significant departmental and university service, serve on committees, and encourage diverse views on emergent construction management topics. Participation in service activities that support department accreditation, instructional design and administration, students in the department, student competitions and chapters, and raise the department’s instructional reputation with local, regional, national, and global entities will be expected. The anticipated start date for this position is September 2021.
Job Description Summary:
The individual in this position will be expected to be on campus during the academic year to teach students in accordance with the department’s mission. A full-time annual equivalent teaching load is 30 credits over three quarters. The department expects that up to one-third of this load may be service obligations depending on the department’s needs and the selected candidate. Therefore, the selected individual teaching load will be adjusted accordingly to take into consideration the number of courses, the number of course credits, class size, and service obligations. Expected service obligations may include serving in department, college and/or university committees, supporting and/or leading accreditation efforts, advising students, assisting with student organizations and competitions, interacting with the construction industry, and participating in service activities that support students in the department and raise the department’s instructional reputation with local, regional, national and global entities. Salary will be based on a nine-month academic-year appointment.
Required qualifications include:
- a doctoral degree – or foreign equivalent – in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Construction Engineering or related field by the start of the appointment.
- a minimum of twelve years of experience; the required years of experience can be achieved through a mix of years working in the construction industry and teaching at the university level in construction or related programs.
