Job Summary

The Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government is a research center at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. It is dedicated to advancing the state of knowledge and policy concerning challenging issues at the interface of public and private sectors. Our focus is in four key areas: (1) Achieving shared and sustainable prosperity, (2) Regulation - energy, environment and technology, (3) China, Asia and global economic system, and (4) Capitalism and the role of the corporation. The center is a "big tent" supporting the entrepreneurial efforts of many faculty and encompassing research in 16 programs and more than 100 seminars and events each year.

The Executive Director reports to the Center Directors and is responsible for administrative and financial management of the Center, including a 20-person administrative staff, four direct reports, and more than 50 research appointees.

The Executive Director works in concert with the Center Directors on implementing the overall strategy and goals of the Center, including research initiatives, fundraising, seminars and events. The Executive Director must be a collaborative relationship builder who can work effectively with faculty, staff, university leaders and internal and external stakeholders. They must also be a strong manager and leader who will engage, motivate, and mentor staff; and a creative problem solver who will anticipate issues and roadblocks along the way.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Manages day-to-day Center operations, including finances, communications, events and logistics; takes the lead in anticipating and resolving issues in collaboration with Center staff and project leaders.
  • Manages, evaluates, and mentors staff, ensuring a high level of professionalism, teamwork and focus on excellence; works closely with Human Resources on appointment renewals and extensions.
  • Exercises financial management and oversight of Center programs and core operations, including oversight of sponsored funding and gifts. Oversees the Center's Financial Manager.
  • Oversees the Center's communications strategy on several active websites, social media, newsletters, research reports, and promotional materials. Oversees the Center's Communications and Events Manager.
  • Actively manages and supports student programs, the Senior Fellows program, and the center's Doyukai program.
  • Develops strong working relationships with Center faculty and fellows; Helps manage activities of the Center's multiple programs, coordinating the efforts of staff, faculty, and fellows.
  • Writes, drafts, and collaborates on publications, reports, and grant proposals.
  • Handles sensitive situations and confidential information with discretion and problem-solving efficiency.
  • Accept other duties as assigned by the Center Directors.

Salary Range: $107,000 - $189,200
Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
