Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder has an opening for a passive acoustic data manager working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). NCEI’s mission is to provide scientific stewardship of and timely access to environmental data to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation’s economy, security, environment, and quality of life. NCEI is globally recognized as the premier repository and provider of geophysical, oceanographic, coastal, space weather, and marine ecosystem data and information. NCEI data management is focused on standards-based best-practices and tools, including spatially-enabled relational database management systems that drive web services. CIRES is looking for a scientist with experience managing large data sets, automating the processing of data, describing data with standard metadata, and maintaining relational database systems. The successful candidate will participate as part of a team stewarding geophysical data, providing discovery and access for passive acoustic data and derived scientific products, and supply customer service to global data users. The candidate will also strengthen existing partnerships within the community to address a vast need for data management.

This position is located at NCEI, David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado, and supports the CIRES Research Theme of Advanced Modeling and Observing Systems.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Manage the passive acoustic data archive.
  • Archive passive acoustic data and associated files, and maintain relational databases and systems to enable discovery and access to data.
  • Troubleshoot and fix problems with data ingest systems.
  • Evolve existing systems to improve efficiency, scalability, and reliability including investigating new storage, discovery, and processing tools.
  • Prepare metrics on data archive and delivery for archive partners and staff.
  • Develop and maintain data management procedures documentation.
  • Provide excellent customer service to global data users.
  • Support scientists at NOAA and beyond.
  • Help coordinate and shepherd data submissions from numerous partners within and outside NOAA.
  • Collaborate with staff throughout NCEI to advance the cohesive management of geophysical data and a strategic direction for data delivery and web services.
  • Actively participate in meetings to coordinate cross-NCEI data management activities.


What You Should Know
  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

  • CIRES can offer a competitive salary and a generous benefits package.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $50,000 - $80,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in the Earth sciences, oceanography, or related field with 2+ years applicable experience managing data, specializing in the marine realm.
  • Experience working with acoustic data, associated metadata, and ancillary data.
  • Experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience using scripting languages, such as Python, JavaScript, Bash, and Groovy, to automate data tasks.

  • Experience with collecting and processing passive acoustic data.
  • Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
