Summary/Objective

The Associate Director of the American University Museum is responsible for supervising operations, museum finances, and exhibition production. This individual is charged with the day-to-day leadership of the museum in the absence of the Director. The Associate Director also supports the Director in their efforts to ensure long-term financial stability, expand creative capacity, and enhance the overall institutional reputation.

Essential Functions
  1. Exhibition/Program Management: Work with the Director and Curator to develop yearly programmatic calendar and facilitate strategic partnerships with museums, galleries and organizations at the national and international level. Serve as the primary liaison to all artists and curators and develop and lead production schedules.
  2. Museum Operations: Establish museum calendar and space usage. Develop agenda and coordinate activities for weekly and bi-weekly staff meetings. Provide leadership and oversight of the museum’s visitor service and retail operations, ensuring effective management of these key areas. Represent the museum across campus and at professional gatherings and social events in the absence of the Director & Curator. Responsible for the development of the museum’s annual report reviewed by the CAS Dean, Provost’s office, current and prospective donors, volunteers, and museum partners. Serve as a resource to university departments and external offices planning interdisciplinary activities with the museum.
  3. Financial Management: Direct and supervises the museum’s financial and budget activities in order to fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency. Manages the production of all financial reports, including quarterly budget reports for the CAS Dean’s Office. Reviews monthly analysis of performance. Reforecasts annual budget as required. Develops exhibitions budgets and regularly communicates all budgetary goals to the staff. Supervises the creation of Professional Service Agreements (PSAs) and other contracts for the museum. Monitors revenue generated from membership and donations.
  4. Personnel Management: Oversees personnel-related functions, including hiring, training, coaching and performance evaluation. Promotes professional development for direct reports. Also oversees termination actions and employee counseling in coordination with the Human Resources Office.
  5. Other duties assigned by the Director/Curator or Dean.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts Management or closely related field
  • 5-8 years' of progressively responsible work experience in a non-profit organization
  • 1-3 years' of prior experience as a supervisor
  • 1-3 years' of experience with budget development and adherance
  • < 1 year experience in planning and overseeing the execution of exhibitions


Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in Arts Management or closely related field

  • Experience with budget development and adherence, as well as experience in planning and overseeing the execution of exhibitions preferred.
