Career Services Specialist
Provide career planning services, guidance, and education to students and alumni about resume building, the interview process, job searching, and salary negotiations.
Essential Job Functions of Position
Responsible for providing effective customer service to students, alumni, and/or visitors who contact the office.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Review and critique cover letters, résumés, and social media profiles.
Offer guidance on job search etiquette, researching employers, and improving interview skills.
Assist in the evaluation of job offers and teach salary negotiation.
Assist users with the department’s online system and self-managed education credential files.
Interpret results from assessment instruments and counsel students on majors and career options.
Work with other staff to develop and implement marketing strategies for the department’s events and services.
Research and report on current best practices in the use of media for career exploration and advising.
Responsible for planning, coordination, logistics, and execution of events and programming for populations as assigned. Assist other staff with preparation and coordination of other department events.
Prepare reports on events and resources to recommend resources for use by clients and other staff members.
Build relationships across campus and with employers to enhance collaborative efforts to make the department’s activities meaningful and successful.
Represent the University and the department at professional conferences and workshops.
Design, market, and present career search-related workshops and presentations. As assigned and approved, teach one section of the class Major and Career Exploration (WU120).
Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or appropriate.
Non-Essential Job Functions of Position
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling, or related field; Or a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in career services, advising, or counseling.
Preferred: Experience in career counseling or advising in higher education. Teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Preferred: Experience with desktop publishing software such as InDesign or Microsoft Publisher. Experience with administration of social media, website development and maintenance.
Licenses, Certifications & Registrations
Preferred: Certification for either Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ( MBTI ) or Strong Interest Inventory or both.
