Job Description Summary
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching, clinical service, outreach, and research. Teaching responsibilities include the clinical and didactic instructional activities of the professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to ophthalmology. Clinical service responsibilities include a hospital assignment of approximately 50% for tenure track and 75% for clinical track. This involves providing clinical care of patients, teaching veterinary medical students, intern and resident training, and consultation with private practitioners. Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is unique nationwide, as it operates an independent Equine Ophthalmology service allowing students to take Equine Ophthalmology rotations during their 4th year of training.
Ophthalmology at Auburn University has a diverse caseload consisting of small animal, equine, and other species. The ophthalmology service provides primary patient care in the small animal hospital, collaborative care with the equine medicine service, and consultation for the food animal service, exotic animal medicine, and southeastern raptor center.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this faculty position must hold a DVM or equivalent degree at the time employment begins. Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists or board eligibility with the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology is required. Residents completing programs in 2021 are strongly encouraged to apply. Clinical and/or basic science research experience and clinical expertise in both small animal and equine ophthalmology are desirable. Excellent communication skills are required in small group as well as large lecture hall settings. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.
