Job Description

Missouri Western State University is committed to maintaining a campus environment for students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and visitors that will not adversely affect their health, safety and surrounding environment, or subject them to risks of accidental injury or illness. The Director of Risk Management is responsible for identifying, analyzing, overseeing, measuring, monitoring and reporting on key risk management issues as well as developing and implementing programs which reduce the University’s exposure to risk, ensure the University’s compliance with applicable regulations pertaining to visitor and employee occupational safety and health applicable regulations related to environmental protection.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
•Plans, organizes, administers, and coordinates a university-wide loss prevention and control program to identify and analyze potential exposure to loss; develops related goals and other program performance expectations.
•Develops, implements, and monitors related work plans to achieve goals and performance measures.
•Examines, designs, and implements alternative risk management and mitigation techniques, strategies, and measures. •Monitors the effectiveness of techniques and makes changes as required.
•Directs and participates in the development of new programs, initiatives, and incentives to improve environmental and workplace safety.
•Manages the comprehensive chemical management plan and identifies, packages, and coordinates the storage, receipt, distribution, and disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with federal and state standards.
•Identifies, tracks, and assesses safety, security, and other environmental incidents to identify areas for improvement and determine corrective/remedial action.
•Develop and maintain liaisons with municipalities, county departments, and similar entities to facility plan development, response effort coordination, and exchanges of personnel and equipment.
•Serves on a variety of internal committees and/or task forces, which includes providing oversight of the Emergency Management team. Represents the university in outreach functions and professional groups and organizations.
•Conducts periodic risk prevention audits of university assets and oversees inspections performed by outside agencies.
•Participates in disaster recovery planning for the university.
•Serves as a liaison with applicable internal departments regarding employee and student safety matters.
•Participates in the purchase of policies or self-assumption of risks for a broad range of insurance coverages, excluding employee insurance benefits. Collaborates with applicable internal departments and oversees the development of specifications for the purchase of insurance by bid or negotiation, as needed. Recommends the selection of vendors.
•Interprets laws, policies, and procedures to ensure the university environmental and risk management programs are compliant.
•Builds university-wide support and visibility for risk management and loss control programs and initiatives and obtains stakeholder buy-in on program goals and objectives.
•Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree in risk management, business administration, finance, accounting, or related field, or occupational health and safety.
•Minimum five years’ experience in risk management and/or regulatory compliance as related to environmental safety or handling of hazardous materials.

Required Licensing:
•Licensing and Certifications needed to successfully complete the essential functions of the position.
•University sponsorship of licensing and/or certifications if needed to be obtained or updated.

Preferred Qualifications

•Advanced degree, CRM, PRM, or other professional certification in risk management or insurance; CSP or CHMM or other professional certification in health and environmental safety.
•Prior experience in managing risk or overseeing institutional safety in higher education.
•Demonstrated knowledge and successful experience, obtained from a combination of formal education and work/life experience in Emergency Planning and disaster management to include, but not limited to: Severe Weather Events, Active Shooter, Abductions, and Hazard Materials Emergencies and other events preferred.

•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to produce concise and effective presentation to influence and advise senior leadership across campus.
•Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
•Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize; ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
•Ability to work collaboratively, build and maintain a network of contacts (internal and external) and coordinating with a large number of stakeholders across campus to achieve effectiveness.
•Experience working closely with cross-functional teams and various stakeholders to identify and solve complex problems.
•Ability to work outside normal working hours to address immediate needs/risks.
