Academic Advisor College of Arts and Sciences
Vacancy #:  001242
Recruitment Range:  Commensurate with Qualifications
Closing Date:  Open Until Filled

Organizational Unit Overview
The Bachelor of Science in University Studies (BSUS) degree program is designed for students who seek a course of study outside the traditional “majors” approach to successful degree completion. This program offers students the opportunity to develop an integrated, yet individualized program of study within specific guidelines that meets either future career or advanced study needs. The program also provides opportunities for degree completion of non-traditional students, including those with some credit without degree completion (referred to as part-way home students) and military and veterans. The BSUS supports the university’s commitment to access by removing barriers to university completion for many students and the commitment to success by providing students with rich opportunities for meeting individual career or academic interests.

Job Duties
Student Advising: The University Studies’ student embodies unique characteristics and activities that require intensive, high-touch advising (e.g., online, adult, readmit, part-way home, high hours of completed work, military-affiliated, etc.). These students must create an individualized degree program that is interdisciplinary and meets the demands of the curriculum proposal process. As a result, the Academic Advisor assists students with navigating the undergraduate curriculum and selecting courses, major/career exploration, and building networks with constituents on and off campus. Additional duties include maintaining comprehensive records on students enrolled in the program, executing advisee reports, identifying and resolving advising issues, monitoring student progress towards graduation, helping students build networks with constituents on and off campus, keeping current students informed concerning degree requirements, and general student contact, both face-to-face and electronic.

Instruction: The Academic Advisor develops and manages the BSUS gateway course (UNIV 2000) and teaches at least three sections per academic year.

Student Enrollment and Retention: The Academic Advisor develops and executes student enrollment and retention activities including responding to inquiries, relationship management and support of current student populations, and other activities as appropriate.

Contingent upon funding.

Minimum Education/Experience
A Master’s degree in a closely related discipline such as counseling, education, communication, or psychology from an appropriately accredited institution is required. Strong advising, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer-service skills are required. The candidate will also need strong computer skills and should enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Three years or more experience in counseling, advising, career services, and/or teaching in higher education is preferred.
