Dept Marketing Statement
Applies professional concepts and skills to support educational initiatives and multi-culturally relevant approaches to the planning, coordination and implementation of sustainability efforts for the Sustainability Office at UCSC.

The Sustainability Programs Manager develops, implements and monitors a wide range of short and long-term, campus-wide plans and projects related to sustainability, with a particular focus on materials management (procurement and zero waste), food systems, health, as well as diversity and inclusion within sustainability. The position is responsible for fostering a culture of sustainability on campus that embraces diverse, multicultural notions of caring for the environment; identifying, coordinating and serving as a catalyst for units and individuals who are implementing sustainability programs; and engaging with executive campus leadership, principal officers, faculty, staff and students to foster sustainability broadly across campus units. This position includes working closely with undergraduate students and empowering their leadership and professional development to advance sustainability. The Sustainability Programs Manager oversees programs that result in institutional change through physical projects and works with a variety of campus stakeholders to research, pilot and advance projects that work to deeply integrate sustainability. Drawing on current best practices within the field, the Sustainability Programs Manager provides expert advice on a variety of sustainability topics to the campus community.

Mission and Goals: The Sustainability Office fosters a culture of sustainability at UCSC by actively engaging students, staff, faculty, and community members through education, leadership development, institutional change and behavioral transformation.
  1. Institutionalize sustainability. Work proactively to integrate sustainability into the core responsibilities and daily activities of faculty, students, and staff.
  2. Improve environmental performance through the Campus Sustainability Plan. The Sustainability Office facilitates and manages UCSC's Campus Sustainability Plan and supports the campus to refine, track, and implement goals and benchmarks.
  3. Create centralized communication and promote successes. Create a central space for coordination of campus sustainability activities, educational initiatives, noteworthy campus achievements, reporting and national rankings.
  4. Promote a culture of inclusive sustainability. Work to advance different cultural definitions of how to care for environmental spaces and human communities, promote social justice and anti-racism work, and advance multicultural inclusion in sustainability initiatives across campus.
  5. Integrate sustainability into the classroom. Build bridges between operations, teaching and research to establish UCSC as a living, learning laboratory in which students can learn and apply sustainability principles and techniques.

In addition to operationally-focused sustainability efforts in carbon neutrality, zero waste, water conservation, and more, the Sustainability Office works to advance environmental sustainability and social justice, with a central focus on advancing multi-culturally relevant and inclusive approaches to caring for the environment. The Sustainability Office critically evaluates its own communications, approaches and priorities to environmental efforts in order to reduce bias and center the voices of UCSC's increasingly diverse campus community.
