Serve as the primary contact for questions regarding bibliographic records, holdings, and maintenance. Works with library staff and others to evaluate, maintain and troubleshoot systems, such as the integrated library system. Provides research support for book and ebook requests and replacements. Participates in collection development and special projects. Assists with institutional repository maintenance and metadata creation for digital collections and exhibits. Provides reference support and other assistance as needed. Oversees the daily activities of a student or an intern assistant.

This position requires an MLIS/MLS or candidates within one semester of graduating. Candidates will have taken as part of a Masters degree program cataloging, metadata and reference courses. This position is meant for an entry level professional librarian.

​Looking for a recent graduate of an MLIS/MLS accredited program who will be responsible for completing all complex, original, and copy cataloging services for materials in analog and electronic formats.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide metadata for complex and original cataloging for materials in analog and electronic formats, such as print books and ebooks, print and electronic serials, streaming and analog media, born-digital and digitized objects, whether owned or licensed by the institution. Oversee batch loading of metadata records.
  • Provide copy cataloging services for new books and non-print items by searching for appropriate records in a national database, downloading them to our local system, editing them according to national and local standards and performing authority and quality control work as necessary.
  • Enhance the online catalog by updating records from OCLC, adding contents notes as needed, and deleting and editing records. Monitor and process title and format changes. Compile monthly statistical information for cataloging activities. Maintain documentation for internal cataloging procedures and local standards. Resolve inquiries from library staff regarding bibliographic records and holdings.
  • Research book and ebook requests for purchasing. Review institutional and contract vendors, commercial suppliers, local sources, and open access. As necessary, provide backup support for ordering books, ebooks, and other requests.
  • Assist with collection development and special projects to support the library mission, campus initiatives and new collaborations. Maintain information integrity to ensure internal and external information is up to date and accurate.
  • Assist with inventory including missing, lost, and damaged items workflow. Review items for bindery repair and restoration. Prepare and receive bindery shipments.
  • Recruit, train and oversee the daily activities of a student or an intern assistant. Maintain documentation for the training manual.


Your Other Responsibilities:
  • As needed, assist with institutional repository maintenance, provide descriptive metadata and manage controlled vocabularies for digital collections and exhibits under the direction of the Archives department.
  • Assist patrons at the Reference desk by answering questions, advising on appropriate resources, and instructing patrons in the use of the online catalog and other resources.
  • Collaborate with Fenway Library Organization librarians, Emerson staff, and stakeholders to evaluate new systems and products. Monitor developments in the field of cataloging and technical services to remain current on effective strategies and best practices.
  • Serve on one or more library teams to serve the needs of the library and its constituencies.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Your Skills and Experience:
  • Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) / Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) from an ALA- accredited institution in progress or completed.
  • 2 years experience within MLIS or MSLS
  • MARC data format knowledge and experience
  • Familiarity with using online catalogs and other electronic resources
  • Experience using critical thinking for analysis
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate through communication media, such as, Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Slack


You'll be preferred if you have:
  • Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) / Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent experience
  • Library or related experience in an academic setting
  • Integrated Library System knowledge, such as, Voyager, especially cataloging module
  • Familiarity with OCLC management services
  • Familiarity with Cataloger's Desktop & RDA Toolkit

Please note, the salary range for this position is between $40,000 to $43,000 earned over the ten months this position works on campus.
