Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), a global leader in biomedical education, innovative research and cure discovery invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director and Attending Veterinarian for the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM).

Baylor College of Medicine is a private, stand-alone health sciences university located in Houston, within the Texas Medical Center. Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Dean of Research, the Executive Director is responsible for the strategic vision, management and operation of the CCM in a manner consistent with the strategic goals of the College. The CCM operates a large, diverse animal care program that includes 8 vivaria, 25 satellite facilities, and several specialized core facilities, including a gnotobiotics core, zebrafish core, and diagnostic laboratory as well as the Mouse Metabolism and Phenotyping Core, Core for Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Gastrointestinal Experimental Model Systems Core. The program has over 600 active protocols, over 200,000 square feet of facility space, and is AAALAC accredited. CCM employs a staff of approximately 220 professionals, including 9 full-time veterinarians as well as veterinary technicians, trainers, animal care technicians and business office personnel. The Center has a residency training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine that began accepting residents in 2020 and will grow to 3 trainees by 2023.

BCM seeks candidates with deep experience in laboratory animal medicine encompassing a variety of species, knowledge of federal regulations and the AAALAC accreditation process, and program oversight including facilities and personnel management. The successful candidate should be able to lead change and forge strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders across a complex organization. Candidates should have a strong commitment to research animal welfare and the highest standards of veterinary care. The Executive Director will hold a primary academic appointment in a relevant department based on the candidate’s background and experience. As a faculty member, the position would engage in collaborative research and support research infrastructure, contribute to the teaching and training of research professionals and students, and lead a laboratory animal medicine residency training program.

The successful candidate will bring a consultative approach with principal investigators and their staff regarding animal model development and type of research animals needed for their protocols and provide guidance or assistance with procedures related to animal care in principal investigators’ protocols. The Executive Director will have experience with vivarium design and new facility construction as well as the ability to work quickly, effectively, and productively in a team-oriented environment. The Executive Director will also possess leadership in the areas of financial management, planning, directing, quality improvement, personnel management, institutional representation and customer service to academic and investigator constituencies.


Additional qualifications include a DVM or VMD degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited veterinary school, board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the USA and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine, 5 or more years leadership experience in large complex academic animal care program and 5 or more years serving on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Preferred qualifications include additional advanced degrees (MS, PhD, etc.) or other advanced scientific training and participation or leadership in national veterinary or biomedical research organizations such as American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, AAALAC or other similar professional groups.
